The S5 has some ribs on the case that the S4 doesn't.

the trannies are swappable, you dont need to change the mounts. I think the only difference is one of the connectors for the wiring

I would have said the S5 is better, the case is stiffer, the rest is the same AFIK.

The crossmembers are different, use the one that fits the tranny, they both bolt to the chassis the same way.

I'm just going off of memory here, so the details may not be 100% accurate. I know for sure that the crossmembers bolt to the car the same way and bolt to the transmissions in different ways.

The angle of the Y blocks are different and the way they bolt to the transmission and crossmember is different. On one tranny there bolted directly to the tranny, on the other there's a bracket that goes between the tranny and the Y blocks (or was it between the Y blocks and the crossmember?). Anyway, you need to use the correct crossmember for the transmission and it'll bolt right up to the chassis.

s5 tranny will fit just fine, wires are the same but i think there might be less connectors, i'm putting my s5 tranny in tonight or tomorrow, i fried a few bearings in my s4, its pretty bad, leaking oil onto the exhaust too . . .

Yea, that's why I switched too, mine leaked. It made a pretty good smoke show one day right after I filled it, in retrospect it was probably slightly overfilled. It's nice to no longer have the smell of transmission fluid associated with driving the car.
