does the car make the noise when you let off the clutch in neutral? if so its the throwout bearing that sits on the end of the clutch fork.
if its making that noise in neutral with the clutch out AND when you're accelerating, its the throwout bearing.

he said its only in "ist-3 and 5th"...im assuming he meant 1-3 and 5...care to explain how it could be the throw out bearing if it only does it in those specific gears?

be more specific man...in 1st thru 3rd...and 5th...when accelerating in gear...it whines? stock clutch assemble? did it just start doing it all of a sudden? did you notice any particles in the fluid when you drained it?

no, its been like that since i've gotten the car.... and i didnt really mind it ... im just really curious about it now... its not the throwout bearing... i have a brand new rp clutch and new bearing........ even with a factory clutch it whined........ its really really strange.... as the rpms climb it whines louder, but like i had stated earlier it only whines in 1-3 and 5th....

It is probably not clutch related if it is 1-3 and 5. Fourth gear has a 1:1 ratio and is therefor not geared in the tranny. It is a problem inside the tranny itself.

maybe its happening in EVERY gear. "ist-3 and 5th" isnt exactly the best explanation. if its also happening in fourth, its a good chance its the throwout bearing.

if its gear specific its the transmission bearings. noisy gears are usually a good sign of your transmission getting old.

ok since its gear specific its probably your transmission bearings. try using some synthetic trans fluid. i've heard that it helps syncros and helps quiet the bearings down a little as well.

I had a whine in my tranny that got progressively worse as time went by (started as a whine in neutral with the clutch out.) It was internal bearings. Fortunately, I found an inexpensive used tranny to replace it.

Lots of people are happy with Royal Purple, but Redline MT-90 is the ****. Anyway, if the noise does start to bug you keep an eye out for used trannies - the cheapest way to fix it...

that would be your throwout bearing, not the transmission, right?
eh?

Diagnose this problem

Whining comes from tranny, starts quietly around 30mph, gets extremely loud at 40mph on the dot, quiets down + or - 3mph from 40mph. Can be heard from 40+.

On the freeway the other day, i smelled burning while going 80mph. Whine gets horribly bad at upper speeds.

Happens in EVERY gear.

Sounds like its coming from the back, but i believe its resonating. Plus the rear differential i bought was from a guy who said that it made no noise while he had it. Tranny was from a Salvage yard...

Both have plenty of generic oil in them.

Metal vibrational noises can be heard from inside the tranny if i turn off music.

Diagnose away

Thanks

Not this time. Pilot and throwout bearings were both brand spanking new. Was also starting to get a fast rattle (more like buzzing) around 3800 rpm in 4th This was all with Redline MT-90. Replaced the tranny and that ended it on the spot.

If it was coming from the diff, I doubt that you would be able to smell it on the highway unless you had a fair-sized hole in the body somewhere for it to enter into the car through...

Whine gets horribly bad at upper speeds.
Upper speeds. NOT upper revs? The whine isn't associated with particular rpms?

There was no question that my tranny whine/rattle was coming from the tranny. The sound was right there. So maybe it is the diff.

Plus the rear differential i bought was from a guy who said that it made no noise while he had it. Tranny was from a Salvage yard...

The first thing I'd urge you to do is replace that oil with Redline MT-90. It's magical stuff. At the very least it may buy you some time b4 you have to replace whatever is thrashed.
Did you notice these noises b4 you bought the diff?

What is a 'metal vibrational' noise? Rattling, buzzing, clacking?

you can hear whinng sound at idle but in 3rd and 5th maybe is one of the tranny bearing, might have to replace the tranny, a rebulid one is around $400-$500 I think.

on mine, its speed sensitive, now RPM.

no noises before swap (entire driveline)

the noise sounds like rattling.

its also very loud on low speed deceleration.

yep, me too. High pitched whine starts 30 mph peaks in volume at 40 mph and decreases above that, but is always audible. It is only when on the gas accelerating or maintaining speed at any gear and rpm combination. The car is an 88 TII with stock diff. Does any one know what is up with this????

Help please!

I had a whiny tranny too. Turns out it was being caused by the input shaft gear and the matching gear on the counter shaft being worn cause the person I bought the car from let the gear oil drain out and so the gears ate themselves a bit. Noting for it but replacing the parts or getting another tranny. One thing that was telling about this problem was that the whine disappeared in 4th.

My $0.02.

My whine seems to come from the rear differential. If I do 40 mph in 2nd,3rd,4th, or 5th it is the same noise. What is strange is as I go above 40 mph it actually decreases in volume. I am wondering if the differential mounts are trashed, and the noise is just a normal resonance being transmitted and amplified by the frame due to the two contacting. Anyone have any ideas?????????????????
