s5 NA rev then dies on start up (AFM-?s)

89 s5 NA, car is completely stock besides RB exhaust (header back), 5th/6th port inserts, had good compression ~ 1500miles ago
still has all emissions, air pump etc.

been fighting issues with this car for a while, car was running/driveable but still had some idle surge issues that i was hunting down. Re-seated TB, TB elbow, intake hose & afm to address vacuum leaks and now the car does this:

Car revs to 5k on cold start, idle begins to fall, runs rough, then dies pretty quickly. giving some throttle will keep the car running in the 2-3k rpm range, but it sputters a lot, and back fires/pops some.

Fuel pressure is in the 33-40psi range (40 when it stars/revs to 5k, drops some when it begins to idle)

Tested AFM using resistance method from page f1-82 of manual...
e2-VC in spec ~285
e2-VS is in spec when full open/closed but seems to be all over the place.

485 closed

185-300 full open (number cycles)

sliding the cone/flap gives all kinds of random numbers, almost immediatly (5% open) jumps to ~1700(?) and cylces randomly with a low of ~600... no consistency, doesnt sweep, numbers go all over the place up and down as you continue to open the cone... is that normal? i expected the resistance to be similar to a TPS where it does a sweep.

Make sure the AFM connection is a clean and solid one. And for the car to run w/o the AFM did you jumper the fuel check connector?

Make sure you reconnected all your vacuum hoses.
Try starting it in first to avoid the cold start up.

.
since this is how the thing actually measures flow, its resistance changes with movement. if you have a digital meter, it will be all over the place, an analog meter generally will be more stable.

when its running, try spraying around the intake with carb/brake cleaner, if there is a vacuum leak, when you spray in that spot the engine will run differently.
