S5 motor swap into an 87 GXL
I'm swapping out my blown S4 motor for a 20K mile S5 motor I found on ebay. The problem is it came out of an automatic tranny car. I need to know which flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, counter weight and throw out bearing to buy. I also heard I'll need the S5 ECU and MAF. My old engine is out and I'm just in a hurry to figure out what I need to buy to get this motor running in the next week. Any help would be greatly appreciated as well as any hookups or suggestions on the parts I should buy.

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
Flywheel needs to match series, so if you are using a S5 motor, you need a S5 (or aftermarket with S5 counterweight) flywheel.
The MOP will match which ECU you are using.
ECU needs to match what engine harness you are using.

Icemark is this a hard swap to do in a Gxl i have the exact same here he mentioned vs. mine is already a five speed...
I am assuming the splines are different on the Non turbo tranny Non turbo motor than a Turbo motor or no?
Any help i am considering ordering a 13b turbo motor next week... but i want to make sure i have everythign figured out on what i need to order with it like mounts, stuff like that.

I would suggest that you get a lightweight flywheel, with a series 4 counterweight. One of the best things i ever did to mine, and you'll never have a better opportunity.

He can't use an s4 counterweight, the engine is an s5.
In order to get this engine running in your car, you will need to either:
For the flywheel part, if your car is a TII, you'd only need an s5 stock flywheel, or s5 counterweight w/ aftermarket flywheel.
The engine will mount perfectly in the engine bay, no need to purchase custom mounts. You would have to run pre-mix on the engine if you are not using the s5 TII ecu, as the s5 uses an electric OMP. To bypass this, swap the front cover, oil pump, and OMP for an s4 TII one.
With all this in mind, I think you'd want to look for an s4 TII engine instead of an s5.
Take it from me, I'm doing an s5 TII into an s4 too.
In order to get this engine running in your car, you will need to either:
- Re-pin the s5 ecu so it will work with your s4 body harness
- Swap all the s5 engine accessories out for s4's, leave the s5 turbo on there, then run the s4 ecu
- Invest in a standalone EMS

^You're right, it should be an s5 counterweight. Probably the easiest thing to do would be to swap the front cover, keep the s4 throttle body and all s4 electronics, and run the VDI off the same line as your 6 ports. Really the only thing you should have to buy is the flywheel (as I said, you can get a stock one, but the lightweight ones are REALLY nice), you can use your old clutch and pressure plate if they're in good enough shape.
You could use the s5 electronics, but it's really not worth all the re-wiring, I'd just use the existing s4 electronics. Much less work.

Actually, if your new engine was from an automatic you should already have a counterweight, so all you'd need is the flywheel itself, and you could probably pick one up in the for sale section.
