is it a S5 lsd or a S4,
If its a S5 the only lsd comes from the turbo and the 89-90 GTUs.
If you look at the pumpkin from the driveshaft side at the front of the diff, the ridges at the top of a LSD unit goes higher then the non lsd unit, it looks more beefier.

There was a picture showing the difference between a lsd pumpkin and a non lsd one. I cant seem to remember where I saw the pics.

Its a viscous type so its not like the clutches could be bad in it.

clutches cant go bad in it because there is no clutches

WIth a Viscous LSD you cant tell if its bad or not from looking at it, unless there is a broken seal or something that leaks out the fluid that in it. THe fluid in it is suppose to be sealed in the unit. The thing that goes bad with viscous lsd is the fluid, and you cant replace the fluid. Atleast thats what I heard.

That doesn't look anything like my s5 NA rear end. It also has a fill hole for the fluid which the NA doesnt. The back also looks very different.

It looks like the pinion seal is leaking that looks like the only thing wrong, I'd change that before you put it in the car.

cant find the picture.....and I just remembered that it was a comaprison between a turbo diff and a n/a diff lol
sorry about that.

You cant actually tell if its a lsd diff from looking at it as far as I know. Youd have to actually look at the lsd unit itself inside.

he doesn't really have to take it apart. Just have him take the rear cover off and send a picture of the inside.

also, I would try to find a clutch style if you can. They seem to work better than viscous
