S5 ECU related to air sensor?

Friend of mine is having problems getting his car to idle. 89 GTU... It will start and run fine IF you keep the gas pressed down. But it will NOT idle on its own. If you start it without touching the gas it will start fine and rev up to about 3k then die.

So we are thinking either HUGE vac leak which we cant find OR we also heard that if the ECU doesnt match the MAS that it wont run right.

Any suggestions?

is your AFM connected? The pressure sensor on my S5 NA is N350, so plug that one in and make sure your AFM is plugged in, then start the car.
