Yes and no. You can cut the carpet right around the base of where it goes under the dash and it comes out fine. OR Use the writeup in the FAQ to pull the dash. Its pretty easy to do.

I was wondering the same thing when I was going to do mine, I ended up taking out the dash. Here's what it looked like with it all out.

I did not remove the dash, I was afraid of plastics breaking.
Took less then a half hour to swap the carpets and you cant tell the difference

You do not need to remove the dash, but I did, and any plastic piece that could break, did.

I put the dash back in before installing new carpet. I slit the carpet up the middle from the shifter hole, toward the firewall, and it went in really well.

If I had to do it again, I would just cut up the old carpet any way I could to get it out, and do the same as before with the new carpet (slit up the middle/front).

Yea, I also broke the front air vent where the VIN is and one of the plastic vents on the side . 20+ YR old plastic is a bitch. Just be careful and take your time, either way it's going to take you a while. I took a few days to make sure I got everything looking good.

a few days or half hour, take your pick

if you take the dash out maybe think about putting a new heater core in while you are at it

I removed mine today. It took less than an hour. However you probably will break the plastic vents at the base of the window. $50 for new ones from racing beat.

I can easily take the dash out in about 45 minutes. There is a large plastic pin under the center of the dash that holds the carpet in (no idea why) and can be difficult to remove with the dash in the car. Recommend brute force if leaving the dash in.
