S4 TII startup problem

my s4 TII has trouble starting after it has sat for a few hours.

It immediately dies the first 30 seconds of trying to start it, but then it will stay running after that if i hold the idle at around 3000rpms for around a minute.

The whole time i try starting it, it backfires.

Someone who was working on my car told me that he thinks it is the LIM gasket, could this be it??

It burns a little coolant at the beginning of the startup

After the car is warmed up, it drives perfectly and holds idle; never dies either.

Compression is 90 all around.

Thanks for the help.

From what I recall, the car does *not* have hot-start issues. It only has cold-start issues. Also, I don't necessarily think that the starting issues have anything to do with a potentially bad LIM gasket (just to clear that up). What I *do* think is that the LIM o-rings could be bad or pinched (like the front-cover o-ring)--therby allowing coolant to seep into the combustion chambers through the intake ports... Definitely something to check out, since the coolant smoke on start-up appears to be coming from the LIM/turbo area. Also, the backfiring could likely be due to a larger than stock fuel-pump... Have you checked yet?

BTW, is everything else going good with the TII?

i am having the same exact issue!!! even before my rebuild it was doing this. compression is good, holds idle fine after about a minute to 30 seconds of holding the throttle open. i have already adjusted tps and thermowax, same problem. i did notice on my wideband O2 it reads very lean when its about to stall. also changed coolant temp sensor with a good used one. definitely not a vacuum leak, it would run crappy all the time.

On open wire b/t the waterthermo sesor on the back of the water pump housing could cause a hard to start cool/cold engine. Or a plug off that sensor could cause the problem.

Yes. other things could cause the problem other than the above.

alright, i checked the fuel pump, it is stock...to the best of my knowledge. it is as dirty as its surroundings, or at least the top is, plus it has N318 on it or something. and the sticker from nippondenso or whatever.

I started it from a compete cold start a couple hours ago, and it smoked like a sob, right between the turbo and manifolds. when i blew the smoke out of the way, i could see some coolant dripping or something on top of my exhaust manifold. and there was a small pool of coolant on top of the LIM but i think that was there from when i was trying to take it off.

I dont have hot start issues though.

I am going to try and sway the LIM gasket tonight as well as the O-rings that go along with it, any tips??
