S4 tail lights on S5?

Hi guys, I have a question that I havn't seen talked about here.

I just stumbled upon a 1989 RX-7 GXL yesterday but I have a question to ask about it.
The owner says it's a 1989 but the thing is, it has the S4 taillights on it. I asked him about them and he said he bought it off the car lot (he is the first and only owner of the car) with those lights. My question is, did any S5's come with S4 taillights? Maybe the very first S5's made? Or was this car made in 88 but bought in 89?
Any ideas guys? I've attached a picture of the car.

Is their anything on the car that I can look at to see if it's really an S5?

that car in the picture is an 89 and appears to have the taillights from a 88 10th AE.

But the thing is, he said he hasn't modified the tail lights and he is the first and only owner of the car. Do you think the dealership could have swaped them?

I just did a carfax report and it says " At least 1 owner" and he is saying he is the only owner so that checks out. No crashes, flooding or any of that good stuff.
The carfax report says it's an 89 so it's an S5.
He said he bought the car from the dealership with those lights. The only thing he did to them was paint the black part of the tail lights white.

The attached image is the detailed vehicle history.

It has the S5 trim. Its hard to tell but S5 trim is a little bit wider hight wise compared to S4 trim. The rear bumper is also a dead give away that it is an S5.

Coincidince?

I find that pretty damn interesting. Honestly I can't help thinking that the car came like that. maybe there was a shortage of S5 lights at the factory, and S4's where used. Thats also possible.

The owner probably sold his "mad tyte jdm round lenses" for more mods, and found a set of s4s at the junkyard.

Those damn things must be made of gold, considering the price some people are getting for them on Ebay.

They aren't 'GTU' wheels.

In 89, you had the regular 5 bolt wheels (these) and the 'vert wheels.

Well I thought it over and it's just too far of a drive just to check out the car. I will search for cars closer to me.

yeah its a painted thing... the S4 lights look much better when painted to match the body.

But you just can't fix the T bird lights on the S5 models... paint just doesn't work

I don't think it's a "T-Bird" thing...I used to really like altezza style lights and tried to find some for my seven...then I decided I liked the S5 lights...now I think both the previous have their place, but neither on an RX-7. I think it's a "growing up" thing.

I love the S4 lights, BTW it was just really hard to see the lines on the trim from that picture.
