S4 or S5 turbo?????

Hey all, I've been looking for a S5 turbo to upgrade to. I have an 87 TII and I haven't had any luck. Can the S4 be upgraded with diff wheels? I know the wastegate porting thig but how about the twin scroll actuator- what would happen with it removed?
Is all this work worth it, or should I just go with aS5??
I have located a place that has them for $300 and manifolds $100
visual inspection only take offs, my friend says I should be able to get it all for $300 or less- WHERE????????????

Check in the for sale section of the forum. I've seen some s5 turbos and manifolds going for about $300 for both. You can also check partstrader.com, there are some on there every once and a while.

Porting the S4 turbo will only lessen the prob of turbo creep, not solve it, I say go with the S5...

Yea, it should, i upgraded my s4 to s5 and i still hit really high boost, i even put the silencer in my exhaust to keep boost levels down, But know the s4 turbo is not worth all the crap you have to do to it, I have seen many a s5's sold for 250 including mine.

The only difference between the turbos is the exhaust housing and manifold. While the S5 ones are better, the S4's can be modded to similar performance. Read the sticky at the top of this section on porting the wastegate and using a larger wastegate flap to eliminate (or at least reduce) boost creep.
The exhaust wheel, compressor wheel and compressor housing are identical, so mods to these parts are the same whichever turbo you use.

Christ dude.. Did you drop some pocket change into your TID? LOL .. kidding.

I say go with an s5 if you dont have a lot of cash to spend. Manifold is better, Bigger wastegate, no twin scroll, etc.. Will bolt straight up but you need to cap the twin scroll and use the s4 oil and coolant lines.

Turbine AR's

S4 0.88
S5 1.00

You were told wrong
As I said above, only the exhaust housing different, everything else (including the core) is the same. Whatever you can do to one, you can do to the other. BNR Supercars is one company that upgrade these turbos, and there'll be plenty of others.

NZ Conv.... So the compressors themselves are the same but the exhaust housing and manifolds are different? Does this mean I can bolt a series 5 exhaust housing and manifold to a series 4 compressor? I have a brand new series 4 turbo so I would like to keep it if possible, it would be great if I could use the series 5 exhaust housing and mani.

thanks

Yep, just swap the S5 exhaust housing onto your new turbo.

Im not sure if Bryan at BNR wants to work anymore on S4 turbos, after doing our 2 units he was kinda "overworked ?" and mentioned something like not doing S4 hybrids anymore ;o)))
