S4 S5 front counterweights... what do they weigh?
I am about to put the front cover on my engine and a friend gave me the S4 counterweight I needed. Just want to confirm this is the S4 counter weight.
Can somebody weigh a S4 FRONT counterweight and a S5 FRONT counterweight for me?
Thanks!
James

I weighed my counter-weights on a digital kitchen scale (?!). The front weighed 1,251 grams, and the back weighed 1,840 grams. The scale only read to the gram. No fractions thereof. I bought it at Target, $20.00. Seams resonably accurate for what I use it for. I forgot to say they were S5's. Sorry.

This may help a little to sort things out.
There is a difference between the S4 and S5 front counterweights that is easy to identify.
Attached is a picture of the two Front counterweights that I have, and as you can see there is a visible difference in the width of the flange. Unfortunately, I cannot remember for sure which is which, but I believe that the thinner weight is from the S5 (89-92) engine. This would make sense as the s5 rotors are 1/2 pound lighter.
I measure the thickness of the weight at 1.024" on the Series 4, and 0.920" on the S5 counterweight.
Can anyone verify these dimensions? How about for the rear?
My other dilemma is my rear counterweight - I don't know which one I have. Assuming Mazda used a similar method to change the weight on the rear end there may be a measurable difference there as well.
Mine measures 0.550. I am hoping it is for a series 5 rotor. Anyone have one around that they can measure?
Thanks,

This may be far-fetched, but, maybe the S5's weights were heavier to help make up for high rpm inbalance? The S5 revs higher.

Crap, I didn't see the "FRONT" part.
doh
I finally got the scale set-up, and the good news is the rear counterweight came out at 4.08 lbs.
Now the bad news...they are both the same weight.
I supposedly got an S4 one from dDuB, and an S5 one from jaiyurai (sorry about the spelling!).
When they both came out to 4.08 lbs. I know something was wrong. :P
I do have a known S4 front counterweight in storage, but I need to go get it.
If you still need the weight from the S4, I can go grab it this weekend - no ways I can get it during the middle of the week.
Sorry about that!
