Exclamation S4 to S5 conversion

The deal is that i have a 87 GXL that has a bad engine. I have a 90 na motor. I want to drop the motor in, what parts do I need? So far I have the motor, wire harness, computer, boost sensor, mass airflow sensor. Do I need anything else. And do I have to swtich the counter weight since they are different series and the motor came out of a auto car. The car is stick buy the way. Will I have to fab anything? Thanx in advance.

Oddly enough, that sensor is called the "boost Sensor" for the N/A and the "pressure Sensor" for the TII. IIRC...

sell the couterweight and put on a corresponding flywheel, which has an integrated c-weight. front covers have different OMP's, so you'll need a front cover. good luck getting the VDI and aux ports working.

you may want to consider rebuilding your bad engine with parts from the s5 motor.

Question. Why shouldn't that stuff work if the motor is complete with airpump and all emissions? I'am taking the motor apart to replace all o-rings and seals since the motor smoked (white). It has 101,000 miles on it so I'am not going to change anything else seen I just need a car to run in the mean while I build my turbo engine.

You can use just the s5 block. You'll have to replace the flywheel with the corresponding with a s5 and the front cover so you can use the s4 omp and you'll be fine. Just reuse your intake manifolds and throttlebody. As well as the 5/6th port actuators and stuff.

So I will be using My S4 front cover with omp, upper and lower mainfolds, throttle body, front counter weight with matching flywheel. Did I miss anything? And when I order a gasket set will it be for an S5 or S4 or mix of both? Thanx alot for all the help.

If you replace just the front cover on the s5 motor then you keep the same front countweight, you'll need to use a s5 flywheel with the block though.

The counterweights have to match the rotors. When removing the front cover why would you remove the countweight anyways?

Because I would want the flywheel to mach the counter weight in the front. i understand now I have to get a S5 flywheel. I just wanted to save some money by being able to use my same parts and not have to buy a new clutch since they are different in between the S4 and S5.

Only way you can use your flywheel is to replace the rotors and front counterweight.

glad someone posted the rottary res how-to. forgot about that...

the whole thing with just using the s4 intake on a s5 block is that extra passage in the intermediate iron.

when i did this swap, i wasn't comfortable blocking the passage off with JB weld. i used a s4 intermediate housing when i rebuilt my s5 block to avoid this extra passage when using my old intake set.

if you're cool with the jb weld go for it. if not, you're gonna have it apart anyways so why not?
