Question s4 rebuild cranks but doesnt start :wallbash:

i had a fuel cut switch that i removed and re-wired it back to the stock plug.
problem is that it cranks over but i'm not getting any fuel.
i checked and i have spark.
i have compression too.
i put a direct wire to the fuel pump switch and i heard a whining sound.
it still wouldnt crank on so i put a rag soaked with fuel in the AFM airbox and it started to turn over and come alive but it just couldnt.
i'm stumped
any advice on how to troubleshoot this one?
i had a similar problem in my GXL i had, but i was a noob so i decided to take it to
marvelspeed.. they got it running but i never knew how.

I had a problem with the solenoid resistor pack not being plugged in, then it cranked right up. So try that.

Turns over as in starts? Or turns over as in rotates? Mine spun around, but had no fuel. I plugged in the resistor pack, and then my injectors worked, and the car started.

get you a good ol' can of starting fluid. load that bitch up and get it fired up. if it cranks up good with that then you can rule out a lot of issues.

is the cas stabbed correctly? have you had someone check timing while your cranking it over?

i think it might be that resistor pack? where IS that located? my car turns over. almost came on once since i put a rag soaked with gas in the afm. but nothing.

i'm stumped, lol.
I looked over my plugs and i sprayed some rust off on the bolts of the wires on the fuel pump lid.
I was thinking that maybe its not making good contact due to rust.
And NOW my battery just died after so much cranking. isnt there some sort of sound the fuel pump makes when its activated?

If you have the fuel pump wired up in stock form, then all you have to do is go near the AFM and you will see a 2 prong plug, I believe its yellow, Jump that connector and you should hear the fuel pump turn on and the injectors open up. You have to have the ignition in the ON position. This primes the system and will also let you know if fuel is entering the motor because you can hear it.

I could be wrong but I think the resistor pack is located on the passenger shock tower where the variable resistor and pressure sensor is.........I could be very wrong though.

i think i know whare your talkin about. its a rather larger rectangular shaped box under the AFM. roughly the size of a snicker bar? lol. so i just unplug it and jump the wire right?

Have you pulled the plugs and rotated the motor and if so, does a nice mist of compressed air and gas come out.

I had a hard time starting my rebuilt s5, so we pulled it and it started right up!!!

well thats just the thing, i get the puff when i turn the motor, but i dont even smell any gas anywhere. i dont hear the fuel pump click on or anything. i just hear the little solenoid in the ps pump click on. nothing else.
could it be bad grounds somewhere? does anyone know what else could be affecting the pump from not coming on?

okay, i did that jumper wire. and i here a whining sound at the fuel pump so. i'm assuming its working. now does that jumper wire come from the front electrical?
or is it a backdoor direct power wire?
i'm assuming my wiring must be good if the pump is working with the jumper wire, so it should be working properly without the jumper wire correct?
the plug is only to prime the fuel system correct?
i think it might just be a clogged fuel filter?
or can it be that i just need to wait for the fuel to rise back up throught all the lines?
how long should that take?
thanks for the advice guys, i really appreciate it!

i think i might have it. i might've had the fuel lines backwards.
does anyone know which hose goes on which? which is the return line? the filtered hose goes on the metal line nearest to the oil filter correct?

i found the resistor. but that wasnt it...
the resistor pack looks roughly the size of a snicker bar. it sits under your airbox near the pass side strut, it has a little metal cover with a round/ovalish YELLOW plug with roughly 5-7 wires.
my leading coils dont have any spark.. this is gay because i had spark this morning.. and last night! although it was weak.
i guess i'll go pick up an extra set of coils tommorrow morning and give it a try again.. man.
i can already feel my 7 coming back alive.
I also have the fiero fan running.. its awesome!!
it seems to have two seperate settings. two seperate wires that control to different speeds.
i'm planning on having one set up to come on as a DD electric fan, and use the extra setting to bring down the temps when i go to the events..
that fan blows hard tho guys, its awesome!!

I was going to suggest this but spaced it when I had to leave for work. Obveously you found the right connector to jump and not to unplug the resistor pack/ rectangle ugly thing and jump anything there.

The fuel filter line gets connected to the front of the primary fuel rail under the UIM and the return line gets connected to the front of the secondary fuel rail on top of the LIM.

Make sure the CAS is securly connected and you have all the grounds on the block secure as well. This can cause a no spark issue.

The fuel lines are tricky to make out in the FSM, it's a common mistake (I made it too).

...One line runs from the fuel filter to the side of the primary fuel rail facing forward (the side with the pulsation damper). The other end of the primary fuel rail needs to connect to the rear-facing end of the secondary fuel rail (the end without the pressure regulator). Finally, the end of the secondary fuel rail facing forward needs to connect to the fuel return, sticking through the firewall on the driver's side.

Note: The primary fuel rail is below the UIM on the engine block, while the secondary fuel rail is on top of the UIM.
(from here: http://howto.globalvicinity.com/gv_w...i=44&co=1&vi=1 )

edit: you just need to know the fuel filter goes to the primary fuel rail, and the secondary fuel rail goes to the return.

i'm curious as to how does a coil pack go bad??
could it be bad ground on the block that doesnt give spark to the leading??
we cranked it and cranked it over and over last night with a brand new batter.
and i took my old plugs out, pust some MMO in ther... quite a bit i might add.. lol
and put in NEW plugs just for the F of it after the whole de-flood procedure.
we later checked spark on the coils and it turned out to be the leading coils being gay and not giving spark...

haha, thanx for the effort tho lol..

oh yea, side question. i cant seem to find ANY plug for the 02 sensor.. my harness is ****, and there's quite a few bare wires just hanging..
main one i REALLY want to plug up is my 02 sensor tho, i never had one plugged in either one of my rx7s.
anyone nice enough to post pics

S4, S5... they are all the same as far as the fuel-rails go.. I'm pretty sure anyways.. haven't looked at an S4 in a while. The principals are all the same though... should work..

The fuel still takes the same route, as micaheli said.
