s4 na will start but won't idle very long

hows it going everyone i've picked up an 88 na that i can get it to start but it won't idle for more than like 4 seconds , and heres the only way i can do it

if i turn key on and just let it be on for like 5 minutes then try to start it, itll pretty much start almost everytime, if i don't do this it tries to fire up but just doesn't

now granted this cars been sitting awhile so i might have to try the oil thru the vacuum hose / spark plug holes to help with compression but the plugs and wires have been replaced recently, its definitely getting fuel, which i suspect might be flooding but i can get it to start it just doesn't like to idle at all and i cant give it gas once i get it to idle for a second it just wants to die. any insight on what i should try first?

ive read thru all the deflooding procedures, now granted this is my first fc , i've upgraded the ground from the back of the engine to the firewall and i try to keep the battery on a charger when trying to start it, i just hope its not blown

It may be that you have a fuel pump problem. The pump itself may pump fuel to the injectors but it isn't holding the pressure need for a fuel injected car. I can't sure about this so what I would suggest is hooking up a fuel pressure gauge and see if the pressure goes down after you turn it off, or if it slowly rises after you turn the key on. What I am thinking is your fuel is running back in the tank and it takes a while for the fuel to come back up to the fuel injectors once the pressure has fallen.

I could be wrong, and i dont know rotaries that well, but it has been a common problems with GM's in the eighties. Just test your pressure. See if it flucuates. I hope this helps.

Good Luck !

start with the fuel system, and the intake(especially the filter)
Clean the tank, replace the fuel sock, fuel filter...and air filter.
Also the AFM on the car may need to be looked at.
Storing the car for long lengths of time tends to creates havoc on The AFM.It will start to build corrosion in it and the Flapper door will stick. That will play with the fuel delivery.
Take the afm off and make sure that the flapper is moving freely. If it is then move on to the next thing.

i feel like this thing is getting a TON of fuel, i know the fuel pumps new, the maf looks newer, i smell raw gas like really bad lol. could be a leaking injector? i noticed its spewing gas out the holes in the exhaust underneath the car. also i noticed the warning lights are not really coming on anymore? i need to get a battery charger and keep messing with it, i feel like its so close!

i never was driving it, its been sitting in my garage lol. i mean it was dripping gas smelling liquid out of the exhaust it couldve been moisture i dunno it was like blackish. anyways a good update mixed with a bad update:

i added another engine ground, added some oil into the bottom spark plug holes, added some water remover/ fuel injector cleaner into the gas tank, let the battery charge a bit and then tried to start it and IT LIVES. was holding the throttle at like 2k just to try to keep it running for about 5 minutes, gradually let off the gas and it stayed idling at like 1500 or so.

let it run till i saw the operating temp come up and i just started giving it short revs to see what would happen only to about 3k-3.5k. seemed to be doing well so i tested the clutch making sure that wasn't blown i was able to move the car back in forth under its own power.

then i gave it one more light rev and i heard a crunching sound and the motor pretty much died. when that happened all of my warning lights came back on so i dunno if the vibration knocked something back into connection or what happened but those are working now lol.

tried to restart it only for it to sound like the spark plugs weren't in the engine, motor was turning much more freely, i think it just lost an apex seal it was good to know that everything else seemed to be working it was smooth, idle never skipped a beat . am i pretty much correct its shot now? the car has 190k on it and i figured this is the factory motor to my knowledge

Thats all well and good but you need to do as misterstyx69 said. He's right ! Change your filters from the sock to the engine. Cover your basics. Lastly you need to get you some marvel mystery oil and run a few ounce through your tank.

Just saying..........

Unless you want to be doing this in the next few months........

Its easier to cover the basics..........
