s4 N/A Fuel Problem

Please Help me!

I'm ashamed to say that I don't know near as much about my car as I should, but that doesn't change the fact that I've got a serious problem that I need some expertise on.

I've got an '86 N/A, and a couple nights ago I was letting it idle in the driveway (about 30 minutes) since it hadn't been driven in a few days (waiting on brake parts, whole other issue) and my wife came in the house and said it smelled like "straight gas" outside. I went out and the car had died, key was still all the way forward, and there was a puddle of gas under the motor, inbetween the motor and the oil pan. I tried to start the car (real smart with the gas leaking and all) and it wouldn't turn over. Called it a night and took a look at it the next morning.

When I went out the next day, I couldn't see a leak from any visible line. I traced it from the pump to the filter, from the filter to the secondary (visible?) fuel rail, and saw nothing. I lost the line in the back, but it seems to be leaking off the back of the motor. Someone told me my PD might be bad, and to use a "banjo bolt" to fix it, but I don't know what that is, where to find it, not quite sure where the PD is, or anything in the realm of this problem.

I used a jumper and the pump came on, if that helps any. I'm at work now, but anything you guys can tell me that I can take home and try would be greatly appreciated...

Please help! I need this car!

search pulsation dampener, don't know if that is the problem or not but the PD they told you to replace is that and is covered pretty extensively.

I am a little hesitant to give you info after hearing that you saw a puddle of gas and still decided to turn the car over (FIRE!) Now, that said, it does sound like the PD, located on the primary fuel rail under all the UIM. While that is most likely it could be from somewhere else, and because you will need to remove the top half of the engine, aka UIM, to access PD, you might as well check rest of in-engine-bay fuel system such as injector gromets and fuel lines, etc.

oh yeah

you said that you went out and unwisely tried to start it, but it did'nt turn over. Now, do you mean it did'nt start or the starter failed to turn the engine over? Hope this stuff helps

I know turning it over was dumb.

It didn't start. (Plugs were fouled)

Next day it wasn't leaking anymore, so I replaced the plugs and it started up, but wouldn't stay cranked for more than a few seconds.
