Question S4 LSD Soda Can Shim Trick?

Can anyone elaborate on this a little further please? What all is involved? How reliable is it? The more details you can provide the better. I've searched up and down the forum (maybe I've not been using the right search terms?) to no avail. I'm looking at swapping an S4 TII LSD into my S5 'vert and I want a diff that's going to lock well.

Thanks in advance!

Is this something for a TII LSD to N/A driveshaft and tranny? Or is it for a full turbo swap?

I have a S4 TII LSD in my S5 vert. I paid a shop to do my swap so I can't provide any help. But I'm subscribed so I can learn also.

Any shop that can rebuild a diff can shim it for you, and usually it's not terribly expensive.

Mazda or Mazdaspeed? My Mazda dealer says they only show the whole thing, pumpkin and all...and they can't even get them anymore...

Can you give me part numbers?

ya, mazdatrix is not really mazda itself. its technically an aftermarket company. they just happen to offer a lot of oem mazda parts as well as some unique, useful items. I heard that you can just stick in another set of stock plates over the ones already in there. mazdatrix does sell plates that are double thickness for this purpose also. I'm into drifting and people told me that when I do it to flip the springs so it locks harder (maybe faster as well?). but that is for drifting application so not sure what you're into. I'll be saving up for an OS giken lsd, the one you can adjust the plates/lock to be either a 1.5 way all the way through to a full 2 way.

Or you can shim it with soda cans like the original idea in the op.

The fact that no one here says they done it, yet they are not suggesting it. Gotta search google for people's personal experience on it.

Check this out: rebuilding rx-7 diff discussion, on a Miata board. Post #21 lists thicknesses of different can types. Post #27 has a link I can't view, might be helpful though.
