S4 import turbo LSD..how can you tell if itz broken?
hi hi
i am a proud owner of a S4 jap import FC3S turbo...and i was wondering how would i be able to tell whether my LSD is broken or not? apart from doing a burnout and seeing if both wheels spin or not....is there another way? a less tyre wearing way? heheheh.
thanx guyz...all help would be appreciated.
peace out.

Now, this brings up an interesting point - MOST of the J-spec FC's do not come with LSD's stock. Can the original poster confirm the car has an LSD installed?

S4 models came with Torsen LSD type, for USDM TII's. Its a clutch type, so wear and tear are expected over time.
Jack the car up, making sure that the back tires have the ability to spin. Have a friend hold onto one tire, while you try to spin the opposing rear tire. It should be work, and shouldn't spin freely.
If so your LSD is still in ok condition, if not replace it.
Your options are replacing it are the Miata Viscious LSD/FD or some after market LSD's. Or simply replacing it with a rebuilt unit.

I wish I was driving!
A torque sensing differential (TORSEN) is not a "clutch-pack" differential.
The TORSEN diff was offered in FD's, NOT S4's, and the "cluch-packs" in S4 FC's. The S5's got a viscous LSD.
"Clutch-packs" basically use a series of small clutch plates and a spring to keep the tires locked together. The clutches slip only when necessary (such as cornering), which is why this type of LSd requires the special additive to prevent clutch chatter.
Viscous LSD's basically work on hydraulic lock-up. These kinda suck for anything but anti-wear characteristics.
Torsen is a series of complex gears that literally sense torque input. While Torsen diffs offer the best lock-up rate, they are weaker than their clutch-pack counterparts.

The only Torsen equipped FC's from the factory are the Infini (IV only?) models.
