S4 Headlight Trouble

S4 Headlight Trouble
S4 GXL:
Headlights and dash lights do not come on after my screw-up. (see below)
Lights do not pop up when the head light switch is turned on
Lights WILL pop up using the manual switch.
Taillights work
Flashers and turn signals work.
Fuse underhood in main panel is good.
Illumination fuse in kick panel is good.
Bright lights will flash using the dimmer switch
I have this 87 GXL with a broken turn signal/dimmer stalk. So I pulled a turn signal with an unbroken stalk from my 'Parts Warehouse', removed the cluster and replaced the switch. I thought it was strange that the plug on the 'new' switch was oriented upside down nevertheless I rotated and plugged it in. Popped the negative terminal back on and everything went crazy. Headlights were flashing and I could hear a relay chattering.
I immediately removed the battery terminal and pulled the switch back off. It was a different part number, had an upside down plug. I think it must have been an S5 switch.
I put the original turn signal switch back in. Now the headlights and dash lights do not light (except to flash) and the pop ups only come up using the manual switch on the cluster.
Suggestions on where to start?
Thanks

I tested my S4 headlight switch per the FSM and guess what? The circuit that controls the popup and the dash lights and the headlights from the Main switch fails the tests.
The manual popup switch passes the tests.
The circuit for marker lights on the main switch passes the tests.
So...according the the FSM I blew out the switch.
Harness passes continuity tests.
Switch is bad.
Headed to the Salvage to try to find one today.
Anyone have a switch, email me at jack_hild@nospam.yahoo.com
Take out the nospam.
