s4 alternator vs. peanuts

haha ok so, I love my dad and all but... seriously.. O.o

My alternator on my current s4 is acting weird, sometimes charging sometimes not, sometimes 13.8V sometimes 12.8 ect. So I tell my dad to send me one of my extra alternators I have from all the engines I have tore down. He did an awesome thing, and took 2 of them to go get tested by the local alternator repair company and sent me the one that worked. They even said that it was putting out 80 amps. Cool.

So today I get my package, and its REALLY heavy. I didnt remember the alternator weighing THAT much, so I get it to my dorm room, only to find out that my dad PACKED the box full of shelled peanuts! The alternator didn't have a bag, or paper, or anything around it. I took a good 20 minutes, spinning and blowing all the peanuts out that I could with my own breath.

My question is, do you think it will be fine? Or should I just go another one??

I would assume if you got it all cleaned out, you shouldn't have an issue.

Peanut shells have a ton of salt in them. Salt corrodes. After you get all the peanuts out, I'd rinse off the alternator with NON-pressurized water and then let it thoroughly dry before using.

I think it'll be fine, probably even if you don't do all that.

Peanut shells are very abrasive (they are a blasting medium). Use an air compressor to thoroughly blow any dust/chunks out of the brush area.

Well .... I blew it out as good as I could, then took it to schucks and had it tested before I installed it. It failed 1 of the tests (keeping voltage while my lights were on). I installed it anyways, and drove it around. It's REALLY acting weird, partly becuase I think my battery is so low, and my battery is a deep cell. Even when I have my battery charger ON my battery it takes more than overnight to get it fully charged. When my lights are off it holds 13.8-13.9v at any RPM, and then when lights are on, 11.5-12.1v. I might take my battery to get charged tomorrow, instead of having the weak charge of the alternator.

On a side note, the peanuts are good..
