Ok here is the story. My '88 vert obviously runs rich as they always do and i want to change that in hopes of getting a few more hp. I was thinking of a piggyback ecu or one of the SAFC units. I know I would have to get my car tuned on a dyno and I don't want to half *** it on that step at all. My question comes from here though. My friend, who also owns an S4, told me that there is a air/fuel controller on the car that comes from the factory. It is right next to the Pressure Sensor Relay. Its called the Variable Resistor i believe. Now if thats true, what would be the point to buy an aftermarket air/fuel controller if I already have one? The only conclusion I can think of is that with an aftermarket unit I would be able to adjust it individually through the whole rpm range not just one setting for everything. Does this make sense? Hopefully someone can help me out. I looked through the SAFC section and searched for it as well but didn't find a whole lot of info.

That only adjusts the idle fuel mixture as far as I know. I would recommend the Rtek 2.X computer modification for your vert. It lets you do all of the tuning you will need for the NA plug and play and is easy on the pocket book compared to a standalone. It is much more affordable than a normal standalone. i agree with coxxoc that the rtek seems like an excellent selection. i believe you can tune the a/f ratio as well as adjust timing, which most piggy backs will not. its also simpler since its just a chipped ecu and you tune it with a palm (can get them for like $30 on ebay or chances are you know someone that already has a palm, i know 3...) i'm actually thinking about it for my supercharged gxl. the other side of it tho is how far are you gonna go with the car? if you have minimal mods or only plan on installing minimal mods then i say save the money and buy an safc. they go for around $200 all them time in the f/s section and are pretty simple to install.

 

For this year not too much. Im installing pineapple racing sleeve inserts next week and then get a new exhaust later in the summer. My future plans are to get the engine rebuilt and ported and possibly run a small shot of nitrous oxide when I take it to the drag strip, but those plans are at least a year away. I'm not gonna be doing a turbo swap. Right now Im just trying to get my plans straightened out in my head. Thanks for the help.

 

Get the Rtek. I wish they had it available for n/a cars when I was modding my old one...

Yea I know. The day I actually install nitrous oxide in my car will not be anytime soon. Plenty of time to do research.
