S4 5/6 port housing question

On the S4 engine (and on the S5 for that matter) there is a housing that covers the 5/6 ports and holds the actuators for the cylindrical valves. On the inside face of the S4 housing is what I will loosely describe as a "triangular-shaped" passage, one at each end just below the two circular shaped passages. What is that passage for? Exhaust? In addition, if there is a coolant-like fluid present in that passage, is that a sign that I may have blown coolant seals? This is an engine I acquired in a parts car and was wondering if I can build it back up or I need to completely rebuild the engine.
