Rx8 lsd into a fc?
Wondering if the lsd unit itself not the pinon gear would fit into a n/a rear. I have heard of miata swaps and rx8's are suposed to swap into fd's and miatas was what I was reading on a forsale post but want to be sure.
Thx

Well if it will swap into a FD and if I remember right its the same size as the TII then no it shouldnt fit into a n/a pumpkin let alone a miatas. Your best bet is to find out the size of one and see if its 7(na) or 8(turbo) inches. If you cant find one to check then call up some one and find the size of the ring gear.
RX8s have 8" LSDs just like Turbo FCs and FDs.
NA FCs have 7" LSDs like 1.8L miatas.
RX8 LSDs might fit into 3rd gen miatas... but I don't know.
I would just get a torsen LSD from a '94-05 miata.

Thanks for the info. So actual lsd unit itself is a different size and you won't be able to swap ring gears correct? I am looking for a lsd but found one on ebay for 75 bucks thats why I was asking since I can't drop 300 bucks for an lsd at the moment. Plus S4 lsds might be worn out because of the age of the s4 20+ years now.
Correct, RX-8 lsd might swap with FD or TII's, but not na's due to different sizes. You can swap with S4 na LSDs, 84-85 GSL-SE LSDs (same as the S4 clutch-type), or do the 95-05 Miata torsen with the ring gear swap. You can use a TII lsd too, but you also need the output shafts, and (iirc) the axles, plus a modified driveshaft - in other words, too much work when the objective is just to replace a bad diff. S4 clutch LSD's are rebuildable (as long as the gears themselves aren't in bad shape to no lube or serious wear/damage)

Any clutch type lsd is usually prefered. And its best to rebuild them when you can because most are worn out. If planning to go turbo in the future its more wise to get a S4 TII rearend/ axels, even the 5 lug parts if its a S4 base model. N/A rears cant take tons of abuse but others have somehow proven that wrong.
It's not the best LSD but it's damn good for what it is. You can't beat the lock up of an aftermarket differential, short of welding it. And welding is ***** so I'd say if you can, be patient and save up for something nice.
