The heater core itself is probably very cheap parts-wise, but the entire dash has to come out to replace it. So you're talking 6 or more hours of labour.

6 or more hours of labor? It took me less then an hour to pull mine and another hour to put everything back in. That was pulling everything down to the firewall to put new carpet in.

Exactly. To do it properly, with care, it takes some time. Often all the little plastic clips are very brittle, and if you just tear in, many of them will break. For a first timer, 6 hours is a good estimate. It's especially a pain in the butt if someone has improperly wired in a stereo upgrade. In that case, you have wires everywhere, improper connections which must be fixed, etc.

I found a heater core through napa for $100. Took about 6 hours to pull the dash (for the very first time) to get it installed and put back together. Enjoy!

Well I thought my heater core was bad one time and it actually was the hose at the top beside the oil filter that was leaking into the car not the core. If it's leaking there at your feet you might want to check that connection first.

But the worst part of taking out the dash is the AC and heating part. I never could get that anti freeze out of the carpet either.
