Exclamation An RX-7 going to waste?

Well i was out looking at my car today.... noticed on the passenger side door, a SMALL spot of rust (about the size of a pencil eraser) . I gotta nip this in the bud FAST! I dont want it to turn into some kind of rust bucket. I put some penetrating oil on it. What else should i do from here?

I was thinking of sanding the little area off and putting a little primer, then some touch up. Any other suggestions?

Please help, I know these are rare cars and I intend for mine to LAST.

get something from either a paint store or home depot that chemically removes rust and after you sand it you should apply that and some primer (just enough to cover the spot)

Better take the door panel off and check the inside just to be safe.

Grind out all rust, then prime, then paint. Only way to do it. If the rust has actually eaten through the door, you will have to cut out the damaged section and butt-weld in a new section. Not fun.

As a rule of thumb, by the time the rust peeks through the paint, the actual amount of rust is at least 3 times larger around.

I had some rust spots on one of my sunroofs, (two of 'em, the size of quarters) so I took it off and went to sand out the rust. I sanded all the way through the metal - it was pure rust. Ended up cutting 1/4 of the sunroof panel out, welding in some patch paneling that I cut/bent to size, and spending well over a day on what I thought would be a simple sand/glaze/spray/buff job. Rust is like an iceberg - you only see a very small part of it.
