RX-7 Buying Advice

Hi I just joined this forum because I just recently have been getting more and more into RX-7s. I have been looking around for an RX-7 to buy on the west coast of the US. I've been having a hell of a time trying to find one decent for only having $3k for one.
I found this one on Craigslist.com and it says it has a rebuilt engine and the engine won't stay running. So the advice I am asking for is if this is an easy fix or something that isn't too expensive to fix. Heres the link to the car I'm talking about. http://sacramento.craigslist.org/car/386591992.html

Thanks a lot.

You see a lot of 7s for sale being advertised as having a recent rebuild that doesn't run properly. I always wonder to myself, why didn't the seller take up this issue with the shop where he got the engine??

There are lots of reasons why this particular car may not be running right, ranging from the very easy to the very complex. For a first 7, I'd recommend avoiding it.

Seems likely to me that were it an "easy or cheap" fix the owner would have the car running instead of selling it- after all, repainting the body and rebuilding the engine are hardly trivial tasks...you'd have to assume that such a motivated person would have already gone through the obvious (hence, "easy") fixes.

You could get lucky though.

the car looks pretty good other than that stupid wing. i guess it depends on your mechanical knowledge and your negotiating skills. you could find that the engine is junk or you could find that it has a vaccume leak or it could be a few things. you wont know until you go and look at it. i'd shoot down there and have a look at it and post back what you find out. as a note, the wheels are not from a 20th anniversayr rx-7, there never was one. they look to be from a 10th anniversary.

I dont think I would trust the ability of someone who would install that wing and call the wheels 20th AE. I wont say anything about the sleepy eyes. Just be patient, youll find something good for $3000 or less.

yeah this guy looks like hes trying to pass off the problem to you or anyone else who isnt knowledgable about fcs. but i would take a look at it jus to get a feel.

xpri325's 7 looks very clean and nice.. maybe u should pm him (private msg) and set something up. in the meantime u can look around.

i actually jus graduated from davis and i just moved the last of my stuff out today. im still in davis now but im going home tonite.. but yea, i kno some sac ppl and they can be shadsters.

for 3k+ though.. u should try and get turbo tho.. cuz once u have an n/a like me.. ur mind will always wonder.. "hmm.. what if i had a turbo"

Try and get him down to moree like $1500....But 1st see if he will let you talk to the shop that did the rebuild...see what exactly was done and what wasnt...
I went and saw a supposedly rebuilt motored car and it was kinda rebuilt.....but the owner didnt have enough money to do the rebuild completely, so it was more of a top end rebuild.......

Thanks everyone for the info. I'll probably just pass on this one and wait for one that I don't have to mess with right away. lol it's been so hard trying to be patient to find a good rx-7. Blown420 I can already imagine this phrase coming out of my mouth if I got a non-turbo. "Damn I wish I had a turbo!"

Yeah, dratix, trust me.. i was like dying to get a 7 and i kind of settled for one that had these vibrations.....

and TRUST..

waiting is better and less headache. def go for that turbo man. i think u will be able to sleep better at night.

its like... having bigger feet... u can justify having smaller feet anyway u want but in the end... girls like big feet.

Thats pretty funny about the "Feet". I must be the only guy on Rx7club that has had an NA Vert for years and DOES NOT long for a turbo.

well I'm thinking about this one right here http://reno.craigslist.org/car/370055847.html yeah its a non-turbo but I haven't been finding any turbos in my area that run for any less then $5k. I'll just plan on putting in a turbo engine later. I really need a car asap I'm tired of driving me P.O.S. ford ranger that gets 12 mpg lol It looks like crap too I tipped the truck on its side in the snow and the entire driver side of the truck is pretty screwed up lol.

That looks like it may be a good deal if it runs OK but dont expect to get much better gas milage from an RX7. Maybe 17 or 18mpg.
