Running a T2 with no air filter... Problems?
I'vew got a friend whos running his t2 with no intake on his MAF. I've told him that its stupid, but he doesn't seem to listen. Am I right? Or is it alright for him to run his car like that?

I see people at the track (dragstrip) running with out filters all the time, but thats JUST to race. A good clean track shouldnt have too much dirt on it and if your engine bay is clean you should be ok. Would i do it? hell no, i woudlnt risk a peice or chunk of something flying in and ******* up the turbo or worse the engine. As for daily usage? that is just plain retarded, there is too much junk on the road to risk flying up in there. The risk is pretty small, but still.. its there. With a filter the risk is next to none. Tell your freind to sell me his car before he ***** it up.

Thats what I was thinking. We live in OK, lots of dirt in the air. I can just hear the dirt getting sucked in to his engine when he revs it up. I'd think it'd foul the turbo and combustion chamber pretty well.
Oh well. I'll wait till he blows it then buy it off him

You should not run without a filter
after alot miles and you open the motors you will see alot of wear on the housings
as opposed to running with a filter

Opinions are like........
no filter=death to engine
Running engine daily without airfilter is stupid.
I bet all that sand blasting through his engine keeps it carbon free. I can only imagine how long that AFM/Turbo/Engine......will last with the sandblasting effect.

I don't think it's primarily the risk of a large chunk getting in thats a problem, the engine will suffer massively increased wear from all the small particles of dirt and grunge. Even *tiny* bits of crap wear things badly when they're in something moving as fast as an engine or turbo...

Haven't we ALL heard this
I was talking with the guy who had my car on the dyno. On person had run their car on the dyno and had no filter. This guy was running 20psi. So there was a masive amount of air being taken in.
Well all at once the car died and they could not figure it out. Turned out there was a vacuum line running infront of the intake. The only evidence of the failure was this weird color smeared inside the compressor. The color of the vacuum line. He sucked in a vacuum and it destroyed the turbo!

The tolerance of the blades of the compressor wheel to the compressor housing are REALLY tight - there's not a lot of room there at all. I've seen pictures of compressor wheels that have been eating dirt for a long time - the edges of the wheel is totally abraded and chewed up, and the turbo get way down on power. That's a best case scenario, too!
There's really not a big difference between no filter and a well-designed air filter - a good filter should offer very little restriction to the inlet. I wouldn't even pull the filter off for a drag race or something - I seriously doubt that will gain you that much more, and is a tenth in the quarter worth long-term engine damage?
