Running rich, could it be the ecu?

I have a 88 rx-7 convertible, with a tII engine but na tranny. Only engine is TII. When i got the car the fuel regulator was leaking causing the car to flood. I got that changed and it starts up great everytime......

The problem now is that i am suspisious it is running rich, i get horrable gas milage and it just feels like its rich when it idles. Also when the engine is cold and you start it up, (when rpm goes to 3K) white smoke comes out the back that smells like gas...only until the rpm goes back to normal thoguh.

SO I was wondering if that could be caused by the n/a ecu, since they never changed to a TII tranny, i'm assuming they never changed to a TII ecu either..... and i was wondering what the difference is between the two?

Is it really bad to drive around with a TII engine but an n/a ecu?

Once I get this problem fixed my car will be 96% fully functional.

do you have any mods on the car? the stock ecu is programmed pretty rich from the factory. Check the ecu for error codes. Try to see if you have any codes related to sensors/ emisions....etc. how bad of gas mileage are we talking? i get about 13 city and about 20 highway.

Well you are just begging to fling apex seals out your exhaust aint you.

You are running rich b/c of the N/A AFM the spring is to light and will raw gas you out of your own car.

You got to change the ECU to a TII or get a fuel controller you also need to use a TII pressure sensor. For 1 your ECU does not pull back timing on boost and 2 the Pressure sensor has no clue your in boost so it still couldn’t if you even had a TII ECU 3 the NA ECU is not setup for turbo 550CC injector fuel delivery.

Hope your tranny holds I have no doubts on the rear end for moderate power but the tranny will pop fairly easy.

well here is the deal. The car is bone stock except for a blow off valve that worked for 2 weeks. The same day my clutch started slipping the blow off valve stopped working. Earlier that night, i redlined it in 2nd gear, when i shifted into 3rd, it made a poof sound and a little bit of the blow off sound, then the car died. I pulled over and saw that the big intercooler hose had popped off. I put it back and the car was fine again, and i tightened it. The bov worked on the way home, but the next morning my clutch started slipping and the bov hasn't worked since....

I just got the fuel regulator changed on it for the tII of course, is the pressure sesor the same thing as a fuel regulator? what exactly is a pressure sensor?

Is there a way for me to tell if my car has a TII or n/a ecu?

I'm changing clutch tomorrow....please let me know so i can get this baby running right!

A far as the BOV go over all your VAC lines and what is the VAC source of the BOV?

ECU yes pull the passenger carpet back and the kick panel and tells us the numbers on the ECU

The PS is a little square box with a 4wire clip in the bottom with a vacuumed line going to it on the passenger fender well. Telling them apart I dunno.

And stay in moderate HP levels or stock until you can afford to go with the TII trany.

I know it sounds kind of stupid, but i can't really tell which one is the blow off valve, there are 2 valves close to the intake manifold on the side the turbo is so i dont really know....want pics? I will check the ecu out as soon as i get that clutch in. I know where the ps is, but how would i tell if it is a tII or n/a ps? What does a ps do?

Thats ia 1988 vert ECU and will work fine. The N338 is the only valid N/A ECU applicable. I look over the fact you had a 88 vert sorry.

I do not know how to tell the PS's apart sorry maybe someone like IceMark or HAILERS will chime in.

As far as the BOV stuff shoot us a pic.

Not true, I have an NA tranny in my TII conversion, its held up just fine. its been slipped, grinded and whatever else you can think of. I also know others who have done this and have never had any problems. The TII tranny and rear end are not much differnt than NA, just the flywheel and LSD if applicable, prove me wrong
