running rich??

ok so i just bought a 91 rx7 with 80k miles on it, cat was partially clogged and one plug was fouled, i put new plugs in and gutted the cat and it still runs rough, has basically no power, it acts as though it is running super rich, also the check engine light isnt coming on, i checked the compression and it is good, spark is also good, any suggestions??

oh, also other than me guttin the cat today the car is completely stock, it has not been tampered with in any way, also there is a very quiet buzzing somewhere in the engine bay while the key is turned to the on posistion, sounds almost like a fuel pump, it stays on anytime the key switch is on

NA, turbo???

Asking if an RX7 is running rich is like asking if the sun will come up tomorrow. The answer is always yes.

Does it always feel like its under powered, or is it past a certain RPM? For instance in an NA where the 5/6 ports arent opening it could feel like its flat on its face after 3800 rpms, but before that they are supposed to be closed. More info is necesary.

NA i only wish i had a turbo, one day lol, and i know a rx7 naturally runs rich, but im talkin like within 30 seconds it burns your eyes and nose to be around it, it is always underpowered, starting on idle and at any other rpm you can get it to, revs real slow, if you need to know anything else lemme know

when you say the check engine light isn't coming on what do you mean?? I also have a 91 n/a and am working on it right now so i may be able to help you.

put grease on the rods of the 5/6 port actuators and vdi, go for spin redlining it. See if grease has been moved, if not then there's one of your problems. 5/6 should open up at 3800 like anewconvert stated above. vdi should open somwhere around 5800 i believe
also could have an exhaust leak maybe...

i mean with as bad as its running i figured that it would throw a code and the check engine light would come on, i mean, it has NO power

Well, only a few codes actually trigger the CEL. You would do well to pull codes anyways as the S5 ECU should store them.

to pull the codes you need to warm car up, ground the one-pin connector by leading coils, turn key to "on" and check engine light sill start flashing. Here a better explanation of the flashing. http://howto.globalvicinity.com/gv_w...i=50&co=1&vi=1

ok so i pulled the codes, it would flash one time, wait about 4 seconds, flash once, doing that over and over, and according to that list 1 flash is the trailing coil, which i dont see how that would be bad becuase it sparks super good on t1 and t2, any suggestions, and would that cause all my problems, basically hard start, no power, running rough no matter how cold or warm it is??

i just read this https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/cas-problem-614856/ and he seems to be having similar problems, also my tach died after messing with the plug wires on the trailing coil a little bit, its sounding more and more like my trailing coil is bad, but i still cant figure out why it has good spark

maybe it just had good spark under no load and as soon as you put load on it it dies off.

Are you sure you checked it properly? I think you'd notice if you were running on 1 rotor..
