Running rich = burn more oil?

I noticed while checking fluids today that my oil level was really low!

Non-driving low! I didn't see any oil where the car has been sitting, so it must have burned it up in transit. I've driven it maybe 500 miles since the last check. I ended up adding 3 quarts of oil to fill her back up.

Would running extra rich burn up more oil like this? Or am I looking at a different issue? I ended up changing the oil filter today as well (looked like ****!).

There are other issues with the car that could be related, so for having a decent background i'll shortly list them...

Rough idle (able to smooth it out when adjusting throttle and mixture settings). The idle will act up after the throttle is nailed a few times, leading me to believe the coil (spring) on the throttle has lost its resitance.

Sometimes (random, but at higher speeds) the check engine light will come on and I will notice a drop in the decel, flooring it solves this issue - could it be leaky injectors also using up more oil? Like I said, I don't see oil laying where the car is parked, so maybe it's dripping while driving. (I've let it sit idle and NO gas smell from the engine, only exhaust which also burns some oil during idle).

I was driving home (last time I drove her, oil level was probably low at this time) and came to a stop, and the only way to get the car to go (engine wasn't revving all the time) was to depress the clutch a few times, fight with the accel pedal by pushing it down until I hear the engine really rev. If I do not do this the accel sucks and the engine would sputter. Needless to say, I left many burn out trails on my way home.

I haven't replaced the plugs (don't have the proper tool handy), but I did take a look at them... pretty clean.

I also haven't replaced the fuel filter, but I have one sitting here. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this before, or could provide some insight.

Thanks

Also, I can't believe I forgot to mention this... While driving the car around 70mph the rpm gauge died, meaning it went down to 0. Check engine light came on, and stayed on. I finished my drive (didn't notice any problems). When I started her back up again the rpm gauge was working properly, then it did it again... dropped to 0.

if your tach died you need to check the coils...also does it smoke above 5 or 6k rpms...how many miles on the engine, your oil seal could be going bad......

122k on engine, this is a 90 GTU N/A.

I haven't noticed any smoke at those RPMs. Generally only smokes during idle (first start) or when redlining.

After adjusting the mixture it seemed to run a little smooth (less backfires). I'm thinking it's almost a combo of injectors and o2 sensor.. most likely wrong, but from what i've read that is what i'm led to believe
