Running 50 weight oil in 100' weather

Is it okay? I normally run 20w50 vr1 but ran out and had 5 qts 50 weight vr1 and 1 qt 20w50 vr1, Since its so hot out 50 weight is fine, it will be changed before the weather gets cooler. am I alright running 50 weight?

Im pretty sure you can mix multiviscosity oil with normal weighted oil as long as the weight are the same, in your case its 50

It's difficult to speculate on how that mixture will react, but you can probably consider it straight SAE 50 since so little 20W-50 is in the mixture. I think it will be fine, but were it my car I would be sure to let the engine warm up to operating temperature before putting a load on it since SAE 50 is generally designed more for cold cranking around 120degF. In theory, SAE 50 and 20W-50 would have exactly the same viscocity at 212degF.

If it were me, I wouldn't do it. 50w will be fine at operating temperature, but its the start-ups that are worrisome. The worst engine wear already occurs at start-up, and 50w will just increase the amount of time until you get full lubrication to everything. This is obviously less important on a rotary than a piston engine since really the only thing that is lubricated is the rotor bearings on the e-shaft, but it is still important.

How much difference will it really make? Who knows, maybe not that much. But for the price of oil (15 bucks max at Wal-mart) I would just switch it out to avoid possible complications.

For Louisiana, you should be running 10w30 in the winter and 10w40 or 20w50 in the summer. I lived just north of St. Charles for 2 years, and I used Castrol 20w-50 year round since the temperature never fell below the mid-20s.
