Runnin Rich -- and slurpin' Gas

OK -- another problem, my 86 rx reeks of gas when shut it off, get out, well actually it smells like fuel pretty much all the time now --- Is the damn thing running rich? What is causing this problem, How do I fix it, and of course, is it something more serious than a mixture question...

Saw a post that the "pulsator" (probably saying it wrong) can go bad and start leaking gas in the engine. That can be a fire hazard so if you see fuel in the engine compartment - get that thing replaced ASAP.

Another post mentioned there's a charcole canister that filters the gas fumes from the gas tank. It lets the tank breath and the canister is in the engine compartment I believe.

I'm assuming if that line's cracked or the canister is cracked you'd smell fuel.

I'm not sure what it is either but your not the only one with the problem. Mine smells kinda like fuel, I just figured its cause I am running rich but maybe not. Also been having bad gas mileage lately.

Listen to them. Look for any signs of gasoline at your primary fuel rail. The smell could also be coming from the charcoal canister if it's not hooked up correctly, but check the pulsation damper first.

Ok -- the pulsation damper -- ill refer to Haynes on that one, I am however familiar with the charcoal canister -- I'll check those lines that sounds more likely to be the case b/c I havent noticed any leaking anywhere... I just smells like fumes

Thanks Ill check it out and get back to you...

I knew nothing on a 2nd generation RX-7, not to mention FI, Ive always had first generation carb cars. But I ordered this part and replaced it last nite, I did it and replaced the o rings below the oil filter on my 88 vert. Took me a little over 2 hours, man it was really easy. PS Mine wasnt leaking, but if my car caught fire that would be the least of my worries, after trying to get 130 or so thousand outta the insurance company for the house, the garage, and 2 or 3 cars , not to mention tools and a ton of other personal possessions it just burnt up.

If it leaks FIX IT NOW! If you think its leaking, check it out NOW!

Now on runnin' rich, mine does the same thing, it gets like 16 miles to a gallon/city driving like grandma, and smells really strong in at the rear exhaust. The car is bone stock with cats and everything, its a California car. I dont think the cats are stopped up cuz this thing runs reallly good, starts perfect, idles perfect. Just smells really strong...

Now the location of it, is right behind the alternator at below the intake plenium. You'll notice it by a brown or tanish color piece of plastic cover the thing...

It's a long shot, but your fuel pressure regulator may be holding too much pressure. That happened to a friend of mine, and his car ran like crap.

No the car runs awesome, cant pick on anything that has to do with it running, idleing or hammering down on it. It just smells really bad, worse actually than my 85 with RB header, a prescilencer and no cats. Of course I have never owned anything with cats that actually worked so I cut them off first thing LOL
