Question RPM meter not working

Engine Idling at 3,000 RPMs. This started recently and now the RPM meter dropped to zero, exhaust system was making popping noises, the motor sounds like it is going to cut off, and the battery is smoking. Anybody know what the problem could be, or have a solution for my troubles?
Thanks!

Something Similar Happpened To Me When I First Got My Rx7. If Its Non-turbo Look Near The Oil Filter For A Ground. Its The Harness Ground. Its Real Hard To See Unless You Know What To Look For. There Is A Bolt That Goes Into The Block, The Ground Goes On The Bolt Itself.

Been doing any work around the altenator lately? Or any other wiring work? BAttery work? I'd be careful around that battery. It's got some of that Hindenburg gas in it and they can explode.

Is the batt itself smoking or the cables to the batt?
