rpm bouncing 1k rpm when cold

have an 88 rx-7 convertable, drove the car all summer had zero problems with it, been starting it every couple weeks during the winter just to keep everything good, started it today and actually took it out for a drive, at first it was cold idleing just fine at about 2500 rpm, got to the first stop sign and the rpms were bouncing between 1500-2500 rpm, drove it for another 5 min and it got down to about 1k rpm idle and stopped bouncing around.... any idea what would cause this? once it warmed up it was running just normal... any ideas?

TPS needs to be adjusted or replaced.

Also don't forget to check for vacuum leaks those sometimes cause hunting/high idles even with the TPS adjusted but i'd start with the good old digital multi-meter.

I've had that same problem for a while now. I have no vacuum leaks and my TPS has been replaced and is set correctly. I've given up man, no one has been able to figure it out.... and I've searched!

Have you checked your water thermowax to see if it's working right???? The thermowax MOVES the throttle linkage. IF the linkage is NOT to the full closed position, and you set your TPS..............the TPS won't be set right.

The cam and rollpin MUST come clear of each other for the throttle linkage to go full closed. THEN the TPS can be set right, to output approx one volt dc on the green/red wire on the TPS connector.

The idle should be 750-800 rpm. Anything at or over 1000 rpm is not an idle. Also any *idle* that is around 1100 plus will cause the ECU to up the timing from -5/-20, to ?? quite a bit more.
