Rough start at -38degrees celcius

Hey!...

First off, it's nearly -38Degree's Celcius here and i started my car in the morning, i knew first off it would be a bitch, it wouldnt turn over, so i got pissed, with other cars i put my foot to the floor and it starts, so thats what i did, aside from the obnoxious smell of gas it started, thankfully, but when it does the engine sounded oh-so rough for a few seconds, possibly 10-15 but after that it smoothed out a bit, i assume it's from all the kold and probably is because when it's warm, once again aside from not being able to shift gears because it's so stiff, smooths out and runs normally, so am i worrying about nothing or is this sound actually bad for the engine, thanx again....

Think about how thick your oil is when its that cold outside. Even a 0w30 oil is going to be thick sludge at that temperature. Probably heard some nice metal on metal griding And it took some some for the thick sludge to flow and lubricate...

Yeah, Canadian winters suck!!!!

I run a 5W50 synthetic and there's a substantial difference between cold (and extreme cold) starts with a 10W30 and that.

Depending on what year your car is, you probably un-flooded the engine by putting your foot on the floor.

The ECU will also be adding MORE fuel for those extra cold temps...this can make for a slightly rough running motor until the temps come up, sensors react and ECU adjusts fuel accordingly.

I remember one morning when it was below 30 degrees C, the engine barely turned over, but it did start after I gave it some gas.

Not to be rude....but if you don't preheat your car at those temps.....your dumb and should give your car to me cause you don't know how to treat it.

fahrenheit is a stupid scale

conversion is a little wierd...for example, -38 C is about -36.5 F, but +38 C is about 100.5 F

but yeah, a lower weight of oil will help, and you should really use that block heater. i don't know about using 0 weight oil though...and i don't much like the idea of large weight difference synthetic oils, they have very complex synthetic 'strings' and leave a lot more residue during burn...ideally you would premix when using these types of oil

I would rather run your 'complex stringed 0 weight' oil for a few months Aaron, than have my engine not turn over in the winter. Its give and take. I can't complain when my FB starts up in even the coldest weather
