Rotary Novice: Car Bucks on Decel, What Is Pipe To Main Cat?

hi there

just bought a '89 N/A RX7 but dont know too much about them so need a bit of help.

on the overun when using the engine breaking the car seems to judder and shake, but under excelleration it is perfectly smooth?? is this meant to be like this??

there is also a small pipe about 1/2inch running parrellel to the left exhaust that has what looks like a mini cat in it that branches down from the manifold?? is this meant to be there??

you may have vaccume leacks, take some hose and put one side to your ear and run the other end around the engine and listen for hissing, if you find any theres a vac leak.

and the line i think you are talking about is the acv tube, it preheats the cat for emmission reasons

What rpm's are you at when the engine/car bucks? Mine does it when I'm around 1500rpm and engine braking. Or until very light throttle and low rpm situations. Still don't know why. I just drive to prevent it.

Probably needs a TPS adjustment.

Yes. It supplies air the cats.

The Factory Service Manual can be found in the FAQ For FC thread. It contains all this information and more, and is an essential tool for any sort of service work that needs to be performed on these cars.

Additionally, the Haynes service manual for the 1986 thru 1991 RX-7 (both turbo and NA) can be found at most local auto parts stores or purchased from any good bookstore (ISBN number 1 56392 007 7). It is only about $25 and is a great quick reference for things like this. Not only does it contain most of the information in the FSM condensed into an easy to read format, but it includes full wiring diagrams as well.

These manuals will answer 99% of service related questions for the car and if you intend to do your own repair work, you will need at least one of them. Preferably both, since the FSM is a free download.

Throttle position sensor = TPS.

Read the FAQ at the top of the page. You can download the FSM's for FREE. There's some links.

Don't forget to search, n00b
