My thinking is do a bolt in cage just so when I run it down the track I have something as opposed to not.

You solder a roll cage, you don't bolt it, unless you just want to show off.

You shouldn't have a cage unless you plan on wearing a helmet every time you drive it

I've run bolt in cages in many of my cars. You don't have to wear a helmet, that's just ridiculous. I would strongly, STRONGLY recommend you pad it, however. I hit my head getting in and out perhaps a half dozen times over the years, nothing dramatic, but clock your grape on an unpadded cage and you will regret it. Don't get the escape type, though. You will destroy your knee.
