Roaring / Whirring Air Pump Noise: HOW TO STOP!

1990 GXL N/A

I've researched the issue enough to realize putting a dual pulley on my alternator, yanking off the air pump and tossing it in the weeds is not the greatest idea - 5th and 6th port actuator needs. However, I just recently put a new exhaust (without cat) and water pump on my car, and when I finished, the new parts must have somehow combined to give birth to a squalling child under my hood. The sound gets louder and louder with more gas, and then at certain rpm's, it is drowned out with other noises - Racing Beat full exhaust. I took off the air pump when I was messing with everything else thinking I'd chuck it in the weeds, but then I put it back on after I sobered up. I hooked its hose to the ACV like it had been before, and I have a belt running it off the drive pulleys. However, it is making this God forsaken noise, and I'd like to stab it in the face with a soldering iron.

By the way, that little pipe hanging down from my fire wall hooked to the ACV/Air Pump system is just hanging out. The RB exhaust didn't have a seat for him on the bus.

Thanks in advance for the help...

did you take off the air muffler for the air pump? its located under the passenger headlight.. that could be it but i dont know why it would be that loud... what i would do is build electronic 5 and 6th ports... there is a great write up somewhere and you can remove the air pump for good worry free

No... All I did was take off the air pump. Don't know what the muffler even looks like. I had removed all the pulleys and belts, and the air pump just followed suit - 2 bolts, a spacer, and a hose.

No... I just removed the air pump - 2 bolts, a spacer, and a short, bent hose with two pinch clamps. Put it back on like I found it - whirring began.

What does the muffler look like? What is it hooked to?

The muffler is a small canister under the passenger headlight assembly.

Make sure the hose out of the ACV is CONNECTED to the hose leading to the front, which eventually connects to the muffler.

I took mine off and got the same whirring sound past 3K rpm, and got worse as I got on the gas. I cut the hose (big mistake), but duct taped it back (hooray for duct tape!), and the sound is gone.

The ACV wasn't fully connected to the air pump... Got froggy and took the intake hose off, buried my eyes under the hood and reconnected the air pump more tightly with the ACV. Bolted everything back on and SHAZAAM! No whirring, perfect idle, 5th/6th ports opening nicely... Thanks for all suggestions.
