Road to 400hp on 13bt???

I want something that is streetable and reliably!

I know BNR has a stage 4 turbo that I read has made 400hp. How about Gt28 "potato disco"?

What are my options?

Quicker spool the better!

I am just learning now, but I hope I can start a project soon!

I plan on rebuilding the 13bt, I have. What step should I take to insure a strong engine for those power levels?

I have been a NA rotary owner for too long. It is time to add some turbo rotary to my life! :-D

Thanks guys

are you looking for 400whp on race gas, or ~15psi daily driver?

I am looking to do the same thing. My budget is 2000 for motor, tranny, turbo, injectors, boost contorller, and fuel controller. Can it be done on such a small budget?

I'm going with an A-spec quick spooling GT35rs(AKA 500R) on a Kevin Landers streetported 3mm s5 13bt. I'll be shooting for 450-500hp streetable but its deffinatley not within a $2000 budget. HP at those levels requires a bit of work like fuel mods, exhaust, engine porting(you CAN hit 400 with a stock ported engine but it will be easier with a ported engine obviously). My injectors will either be 780/1600 or 850/1680 supplied by a dual walbro 255lph setup. All this stuff adds up quickly, especially if you can't do or don't have time to do the work yourself, labor isn't cheap.

You may want to consider 3mm apex seals while your rebuilding the engine. 400Hp can deffinatley be done with 2mm seals, but 3mm can give you a bit more protection against tuning error and detonation, which I think is nice to have when shooting for higher numbers. Port that bitch too!

Are you turboing an NA engine or buying a jspec turbo engine and rebuilding it to put into one of your na cars?

Welcome to the world of forced induction. You will find it is much more fun! Just a bit more costly though!

No, the GT28RS barely makes 300 on a 13B.

What are my options?
Have $10,000 in your pocket and then ask us...

the disco potato is wayyy too small. for 400hp you would need a big turbo, new manifold, standalone, front mount, new fuel pump, bigger injectors, bigger radiator, turbo drivetrain if you're N/A (clutch, flywheel, slave cylinder, starter, tranny, LSD, halfshafts), & a rebuilt turbo engine most likely.

Also, if youve been an n/a owner for so long, why are you trying to jump from ~180bhp (at most) to 400? you could start with a turboII swap and see where it takes you before you try more than doubling your horsepower. If you have the money, go for it, but I think working your way up is gonna be smarter/safer in the long run.

thanks for that Ted i was 99% shure you couldn't make more than 325whp or so but didn't want to give bad advice

Juiceh, I have a 13bt out of 87. It has 90 psi all face but I should rebuild it anyway. do not trust it but I plan putting it in one of my NA bodies. I will be doing all the work myself.

NOPR, I do not plan to jump right to 400hp but I want to have a good base engine and setup for getting there. I will probably start with a stock s5 or BNR stage 1 or 2 with a ported engine.

Maybe i worded the question wrong, I want a good base for "The road to 400 or 500hp". This will be a slow process as I have the money type deal!

thanks for the info
Derek S

I think you're better off selling the n/a car and buy a turbo2 itself. The money and time you save makes up the difference. Just save and save, don't be like me where I'm still paying for a 16 year old car and still trying to build up.

I have all the stuff for a turbo II swap(stripped my wreck turbo II, I bought).......trans, rearend, engine, wiring, I plan on megasquirting it also. My NA is a gxl so 5 lugs all round.
I have everything basically!

I own all my car's out right and they are not my daily driver!

So I good...I just need the info and guidance!

start with a small hybrid, rebuilt engine, and a STANDALONE! if you're serious about making big horsepower, dont waste your time with anything else. you might not even need a hybrid. with a standalone you can push the stock turbo to its limits (not too far though, dont want it to explode) and basically squeeze all the horsepower out of it.

A true turbo swap includes suspension and braking as well. With high HP levels you better have a solid suspension and an upgraded braking system.

Oh and CyborgRyu you are 100% correct for the time, money, and aggrevation buy a TII.

In my opinion and for the sake of arguing if you want a solid motor for high hp applications your looking at 4 to 6k on the block alone. Period..

also 3mm seals are not needed. 2mm are perfectly ok. All racers use 2mm, stock 2mm. As for the 2k budget. It cost me 1600 for my turbo and manifold for forget it Add a wastegate and your past your 2k budget

the route I'm taking (and hope to reach this goal) - not on race gas - 91 or 94 only.

Half-bridge S5 13Bt
2mm seals.
Panspeed tubular header - 50mm trust WG
3" full exhaust - no cats
no emmissions
TD07-25A q-trim turbo
FD intake manifolds
Greddy VSPL FMIC kit
standalone (undecided, going with megasquirt probably)
Walbro 255, 720pri/1600 sec

I think I should be able to do about 400hp. We'll see soon enough.

I have nowhere near 10K in my entire car but I always seem to get deals.

No way in hell you'll build 400HP anything for $2000 unless you get a ton of fantastic deals and are really lucky. You could easily spend $2000+ on a turbocharger alone.

I never said 3mm were needed, in fact I did say they were not needed for high HP. I said they can give some extra protection against tunning errors and detonation. If he is going to be building this himself and tuning it himself it may be a smart addition.

I plan on in!

I am not going to just build a 400hp car tomorrow! I think I may just put the engine I have and run it and see how it does with a good hybrid turbo.

thanks for the info guys......keep it coming!
