ridding the hatch?

So ive been driving an rx7 for about 5 months now, i love the rotary, and the handling and everything but the back hatch on the car.....I was wondering, has anyone attempted to get rid of the hatch and install a different rear glass and do some fiberglassing and metal work? I like the back ends of the convertible versions a lot better and was almost thinking about seeing if i could find a windshield that would fit the back kind of like the new vettes and just blend out the trunk like the convertibles are.

dont know if anyone has any pictures or has tried this before but if anyone has i'd like to get an idea what it could look like and that will probably decide weather or not i am willing to go through such a huge transformation

...why? I personally think the RX7 is much sexier as a hatcback... especially seeing as how all 3 models have been hatcbacks (while the convertable is really the black sheep of the family). The FD is the world's sexiest hatchback :P

Getting a lighter rear glass would be one thing... if you want a true coupe so much, why not get a 240SX coupe?...

That piece is pretty nasty looking IMO, I've seen a couple of lexan/plexiglass hatches in the FS section of TeamFC3S' forum, so theere has to be someone making them.

I did a quick search over there and found a couple of places to grab one:

http://www.iscracing.net/body_kit.htm (half-way down teh page, $300)

http://corksport.com/store/category/...rior_misc.html (half-way down, $515)

You also need different latches and maybe hinges. You'll lose the rear defrosters, and I'm not sure how they look, never seen a picture fo them.

I've been trying to find pics of one installed because it would be a sweet weight reduction piece, especially when combined with an aluminium hood. As far as I know, the FC's hatch is the single largest piece of glass ever put in a car.

No, i love the gen 3 hatches, but the hatch on the gen 2 is one big piece of glass, i was thinking of something that wasnt so long, so i could have more of a closed trunk area and a smaller hatch like a gen 3

as far as the 240sx goes, why drive a nissan when u can drive a turbo rotary? i think the gen 2's would look incredible if they only had the convertible trunk, and a 06 vette rear glass.. might have to work on getting this done on my next 7

Does anyone else like this idea at all? i think the gen 2 looks decent with a body kit, a little spoiler and the big glass, but i still think it can just appear a lot less like a small whale, it reminds me of some car from the 70's that looked like a damn boat almost.

thanks for any help though. hopefully this summer i will start getting some dimensions of some glasses and maybe start working on this idea i have in my head

you put even the stock spoiler on a 7, not talking about the funning looking little sport wing, but the s5 spoiler, it will changes the whole look of the car. I put one on my 86 N/A with a bodykit and it looks completely different. now I'm looking to put one on my 87 TII cause it looks weird without it.

no, it's not. the wisesport website doesn't list anything for FC3S. That picture is of the Mariah FB kit that somebody fitted onto an FC.

This guy didn't post his question to be asked "why", he just wants help making his car look the way he wants.

the wisesports website DOES list parts for the fc...its under "besiege wise" ...it lists a hatch replacement similiar to the one above, along with a complete bodykit, and 2 versions of bodykits for the FD..thank you come again

edit: and they are in fact different...the wise sports angles down before the one pictured above, and the inset glass is different

well, duh... I was being sarcastic when I asked why simply because it would look ridiculous.

Good luck to him trying to sell it a few years down the road (reguardless of whether he PLANS on doing or not)... no one is gonna buy a mutilated RX7.

I will agree that the FC just looks wrong without a spoiler... but nothing could possibly look better than the stock rear glass, so long as the stock spoiler is there to balance it out.

As much as people hate the idea of v8 conversions, go to www.grannyspeedshop.com

They offer a lexan rear hatch and to my knowledge they are the only outfit that offers a complete lexan window replacement set for the FC. Prices are great too. They claim it saves you 100lbs of wieght vs stock glass.

The only concern I had was the overall thickness ( less than an 1/8" on the rear, and side windows)

Lite-weight Speedglass Pre-Molded Lexan Windows
These Speedglass windows pre-molded to the same curve
as the stock '86-'91 RX-7 glass windows. They are trimmed
to shape by CNC router and coated with an amazingly
scratch-resistant hard face coating. While also available
in thicker sizes, the most popular are listed below.
Available individually or in sets. Save approx 100lbs
by installing the complete set.
.125" windshield........................................ 340.00
.093" rear hatch.........................................325. 00
.093" right door window..............................120.00
.093" left door window................................120.00
complete set of all the above.......................850.00/set

Economy window set- flat CNC trimmed-to-shape Lexan
Same quality GE Lexan as above, but without the
molded/curved shape or the patented scratch resistant
coating.
(1).125" flat Lexan windshield
(2) .093 flat Lexan side windows....................350.00/set
(not molded or hard coated, but CNC trimmed to size)

Did anyone else notice that the white car in Vipers post appears to have used the factory hatch? Then modded it for the window.

HMMM! Very interesting!

I think I see slight differences. The one in Vipers pic has a "Style" line along the bAck where the window would meet the hatch, the WISE doesn't appear so.
