Richman 6-speed Trany
i have an 88 GTU and the trany is going out on it, so instead of just replacing it with another stock trany (which i will just blow up again) i wanna upgrade. i want the new trany to be stronger but i also wanted to get a 6-speed trany. my friend suggested a Richman 6-speed. he says they are like 2600-2800 new/rebuilt and we called around and found a few at dismatling yards for 1750 (who knows what condition). does this sound like a fair price for the trany, or even a reasonable swap? if not suggest something else im open to all comments.
i also want to throw in an upgraded clutch, lightened flywheel, carbon fiber driveshaft, and bigger rear end and axles, when i swap in the trany. (open to suggestions for these also)
any info will help thanks

i dont think a S5 TII trans will be strong enought for my plans in the long run
btw for now my only mods are a full racing beat exhaust but after this drivetrain work i plan on tien suspension and someday swaping EVERYTHING over into a S5 TII.

if you have $$ theres a HKS 6 speed dog mission tranny which cost around 6 k
the stock TII tranny can hold 600+hp, 800+hp possiblely, good luck going that high without breaking anything else
u better look at stronger axle, driveshaft, rearend.... before you change tranny
do a search on 6 speed trannybtw

Probably better to try and hook up with a much cheaper tranny, get the suspension work you want, maybe make sure your car is real clean, do some bushings, maintenance like a fuel filter, pulsation dampner, maybe some intake mods, tires, etc.
Unless you plan on going completely over-the-top within the next little while, or you have completely unlimited finances, that's a lot of cash for a tranny. The TIIs trans appears to take a lot of power, though I have no experience with them. You'll need the diff, too, I believe, along with axles, etc.
It'll be better in the long run to follow a more standard route, play around with some mods and see what you wanna do with it.

from what i have read in this forum, i dont think you really have any use for the 6th gear. If anything, you would be losing performance by putting it in, and yea it would be different, but you would lose performance in the end. just my 2 cents.... if im wrong, someone please correct my corrupt info

you need a 6 speed tranny in a NA? WTF
the T2 tranny will not hold your future power plans? My suggestion is get their before you worry about what you will need to hold it.

My thoughts:
I agree that you'll need a TON of power before you can break a factory TII driveline. Should hold a 500RWHP rotary no problem. The weakest link will be the half shafts, in which case *maybe* you should consider upgrading them.... but I'd wait till you actually need that.
As for a 6spd... I haven't seen them. I know two people with Richman 6spds and both of them have been in the shop multiple times for broken 6th gears among other things. These are also both 500HP piston motors.
I have considered a 6spd swap for mine... but I want double over drive. I don't need to cruise on the hightway at 3700RPM...
CF driveshaft isn't going to give you any noticable performance improvement. You will never realize the weight savings from inertia or any other stand point. 1-2 lbs on a 4" rotation diameter is not inertia. Vibrations may be reduced somewhat... but if you're really making big power then you'll need/want stiff motor/tranny mounts which are going to vibrate significantly more than a driveshaft would.
Other than that, I haven't seen much in the way of putting in 6spds. I belive the Miata tranny will work, but it's not going to hold a ton of power. Don't know about any F-body cars or what not.

not-worth-it. 6 speeds = cool, not fast ever wonder why the miata 6 speed was a couple tenths slower to sixty and in the 1/4 mile? the ratios weren't setup right. you're best off having a TII tranny race prepped.

You won't break the TII tranny. There are 600+ rwhp cars running around with them and you'll be lucky to make a third of that in you car. Do you plan on turboing your car? If not, all those mods except the flywheel/clutch you listed are COMPLETELY pointless. If you do, rx7.com sells chrome moly halfshafts. Very expensive. Carbon fiber driveshaft is located in a place where no one can see your bling bling . Your best option if you want to upgrade the drivetrain is to go with a TII swap, lighter flywheel and upgraded clutch. Hope you've got some serious cash if you want a six speed, especially one that will be strong enough for your "plans."
btw, what do you plan on doing with the car?
Be realistic.
