RHD swap... Complete

Took it on a drive today, and drove beautiful. so i'll post this up now...

This car started out as my Renesis project. But building and designing everything for the Renesis swap is taking me a while. Im undecided on a lot of things for that motor and was tired of it just sitting there. so i started this in the mean time...

Got it a stock 1990 GTU (LHD) with "OK" interior and no motor or tranny. Missing most of the wiring and things like that... wouldnt be needing that stuff anyways.

After i decided to put the Reni swap on hold, I ordered a front clip and swapped everything over... only a few minor touches left, pretty much all dealing with the body and interior. all work done by me and only me...

this is kind of how i recieved it. i did a little clean up and removed some things already, but you get the idea...

heres a a few pics oif the tear down...

i have a shit load of pics, this swap is VERY labor intensive. but i'll just post a few since im to lazy to post them all...

stripping the interior, i later removed EVERYTHING.

Now on to the fun stuff...

1st order of business what to cut a section of the firewall. wich is only one way to do it. you can just drill holes to mount everything. or swap the entire firewall. this was myc hoice...

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...wallcutout.jpg

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...lltackedin.jpg

sen2two 08-31-09 05:06 PM

RHD steering column mount tacked in. you have to have this align with the fire wall holes or NOTHING will ever fit. I just eyeballed both and got lucky :)

sen2two 08-31-09 05:07 PM

alignment check, seriously hard to make sure you cut and weld two firewalls exactly the same. and drill out and weld in the steering coulmn mount exactly perfect. i got lucky!

sen2two 08-31-09 05:08 PM

a few on the RHD compenents bolted in for good...

sen2two 08-31-09 05:18 PM

there was a small oil leak coming from where the oil cooler lines bolt onto the front cover. so to fix it i had to remove both oil lines. so i decided i wasnt goin through all that trouble for nothing.

i had this oil cooler kit i had made custom for a drag car i was working on. that car is gone. but i kept this...

looks great.

sen2two 08-31-09 05:22 PM

When i removed the lower manifold, I also removed the turbo and ported the wastegate. I plan on running this car at 12psi. So, since im using the stock Intercooler, I decided i needed some cooling and detonation prevention...

So i installed an AI injection kit. (water/methenol)...

heres some pics of how i installed the pump, reservoir, and wiring stuff...

I made a little mount out of aluminum and bolted it directly to the floor. mounted the boost switch and reservoir to the speaker tower. The reservoir is the stock rear wiper fluid tank. It sat lower than the pump and i didnt like that. so i mounted it above for gravity to feed water to the pump. All the lines were run up through the center of the car under the rug.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...AIinstallb.jpg

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k.../AIinstall.jpg

and heres the Fuel cell installed also...

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...linstalled.jpg

sen2two 08-31-09 05:24 PM

And heres where i mounted my Nozzle (injector). The stock top mount intercooler is just thick enough to tap. Just barely though. I thought that would be a problem, but luckily enough. it worked out just fine.

I used a hard line for the boost switch (like a relay that activates the pump to turn on to my set boost level) that i got from Home Depot. its similar to the hard line that came with the kit from cooling mist. but i got a huge roll for two dollars! I like this set-up cause its pretty much hidden. After i either find a stock cargo cover to hide the fuel cell and pump, or make one myself. this will be barely noticable...

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...AIM8nozzle.jpg

sen2two 08-31-09 05:27 PM

I did a lot of searching and found NOTHING on injecting with the stock TII set-up. So i kinda just gave it some thought and figured it out. The only thing i might change is the reservoir, It's kinda small.

I'm going to set the AI to inject at 6psi, wich is the stock boost level. and im going to turn up the boost to 12psi. with the added water/meth mix, it should run real good, safe, and strong at 12psi. Plus, the ECU came pre-tuned from Pan-Speed in Japan. I wonder what adjustmens have already been made??? Im going to check everything with a wide band to be safe. I might need to step it down to a M5 nozzle and do some minor tuning with a SAFCII... just not sure yet. we'll see...

and heres some numbers for people who want to run 50/50 without tuning. every car is different. But this is how i figured it. Im no genius nor am i super experienced with AI. But this was some logical thinking on my part. Same basic principle applies to every car with different numbers...

stock TII Rx7 has 4x550cc. (2 primary / 2 secondary-comes on at 3800rpm)
M8 = 500cc injector
50/50 means 250cc water and 250cc meth with an M8 injector

so if you split that in terms of injectors. thats 125cc per secondary injector. or 75cc per injector. but you have to minus 30%, since you need more meth, just like ethenol e85. (30% isnt exact, im just using that number cause thats what e85 is. its actually a higher number but im not sure what it is)

125cc - 30% = 88cc (in terms of secondarys only)

or

75cc - 30% = 53cc (all four injectors)

so in thinking about adding the added fuel to just the primarys. its like tunning primary 550's and 763cc secondarys.

or

running 603cc injectors all around.

so, the way i see it. you can safely run 50/50 mix with an M8 (500cc) injector on a stock motor and be just fine without tuning.

but stock i mean; intake, exhaust, and boost raised slightly. wich most people do without any tuning anyways. the 250cc of water, and 250cc of meth, just make it run safer and better. no worry about detonation or going lean...

I will be running at around 12psi. stock boost is 6psi.

Im going to use "boost Juice" from snowperformance. Its thier blend of 51% water and 49% Methenol. Its already premixed and is a proven blend.

thats nice man good work where did you get that front clip and for how much $$$
and did it come with the engine or no if not where did you get the engine and how much $$$

sen2two 08-31-09 05:52 PM

I'll now be starting on the paint and body work. plus maybe putting some nice RE mirrors and a lip. PLus doing som interior clean up. Maybe some Enfini seats...

I'll update when i do some more stuff...

after everything, INCLUDING the cost of the CAR, it came to around 5500... wich isnt bad when you look at my wheels and tires costing around 1200. plus theres a lot of things upgraded that i didnt post. like light weight flywheel, heavy duty clutch, full 3 inch exhaust, Walbro 255 inline, -6 hard fuel line, and stainless braided line all with AN fittings, ect...

So if you been wanting to do this and dont have much money. its plenty possible to turn your TII rolling chassis into a RHD car for under 3k... Just takes a A LOT OF WORK!!!

well, i got it Tiger-Japanese. wich has a VERY VERY bad reputation! I just got lucky. When i bought it, i didnt hear about all the broken motors and bad clips that come from them. Like i said. I got lucky...

and i paid $2254.00 shipped to my door. good price, but rolling the dice on quality...

and my clip came with free goodies like the Cusco coilovers, Pan-Speed tuned ECU, strut bar, lower brace bar, intake, and more... wich was pretty cool.

Good job, but I have one question; why would you want RHD?

dkwasherexd 08-31-09 07:00 PM

sickkk man, great job

mazdadude7 08-31-09 07:01 PM

where did you get the wheels? and who makes them?

Why not? Its simply BA

clokker 08-31-09 07:22 PM

Could you explain a little about the thinking behind the way you handled the firewall?
Clearly, the stock firewall has all the proper indentations, etc. and could have been drilled but you opted to cut/paste a whole section instead which seems like more trouble.

So, why?

Gregory Casimir 08-31-09 07:43 PM

Very nice job on everything man imma be down this path really soon ( but not the whole RHD stuff) But is this gonna be at the rotary meet at the towers? i would love to see this in person. plus would you happen to have any left over arts that you aren't using yet?

well, if you look at my list of cars i have had a few Rx7's including all 3 generations. I was looking for something new. I have been threw many different swaps, ports, and turbos. This was something totally new and created new challanges for me to learn upon. Cars (mainly Rx7's) is my hobby. Its what i do. I am literally in my garage working on something 7 days a week year round.

plus, its just dope! you gotta see the looks people give you. lol... and my mom has a skyline (no bullshit), so i have already had a lot of RHD seat time. so its easy for me to switch over driving styles...

i stated that theres 3 ways to do this.

1. swap the entire firewall
2. cut and weld the sections you want (what i did)
3. drill holes and mount it all

theres 2 reasons i didnt just drill the holes. one being that the clutch master hole isnt just a hole. it has a lip around it to place it correctly. would of been way to hard to duplicate that lip. and two, i fucking SUCK at drilling holes. I never get them aligned perfect, lol... but, I am a certified welder and have a lot of practice in cutting and matching peices of metal. so for me, it was easier. for someone else, maybe the other routes would have been better.

I bought the wheels 3 years ago for my FD. got them from eBay, dont know who makes them. I leave name brands for fan boys. i later got rid of the car and had these sitting around waiting to be used. So i slapped them on here... I love the look of them. but i been thinking of going with something else later on when i get tired of these. something smaller and lighter. these are 18x11 in the rear, and 18x9 in the front...

just startn 08-31-09 10:07 PM

did a great job. but i didn't notice if you painted the engine bay for real lol not like rattle canned or what not. need coilovers in the rear bad! but that thing looks badass and i love the wheels. shits lagit :icon_tup:

Spirit-RE 08-31-09 10:22 PM

Awesome project. Maybe a dumb question but would you run into any legal issues with the rhd?

Grappler 08-31-09 10:37 PM

That's a really nice job it's good to see some documentation on this.

btw... the vent on my driver side looks like that too :(

sen2two 08-31-09 11:21 PM

has Tanabe springs in the rear cause i couldnt find the matching rear coilovers... but its cool. Im not trying to race the car. just a daily driver..

and no legal issures here. its still a complete US car with a VIN and title. i just swapped parts basically.

sen2two 08-31-09 11:23 PM

yeah, i only seen one other person on here that did it (napsterfreak). and he didnt post much pics. I was originally going to do a complete how to write up. but with the amount of work involved, it would of took me a few days to write that up.

I have many more pics, i just got tired of loading them to photobucket and just put up key points.

FCmidnight Blue 88 08-31-09 11:50 PM

dude thats awesome work well done! I like it a lot. :)

need RX7 09-01-09 12:10 AM

Badass, man. I must admit, RHD usually doesn't excite me very much, but seeing the process and all the work gone into it is simply amazing. Great job.

sen2two 09-01-09 03:09 AM

thanks for all the compliments. i started on some of the body stuff today. underneather the Amemiya wing has some rust probems. im cutting the metal out and rewelding new metal in. then oin to use double sided tape (like for side skirts) to place the wind. this way, if i remove the wing, no holes will need to be filled again...

and i started prepping the gas door to be welded shut and smoother out. i'll post pics up of this stuff also.

CWynn5 09-01-09 06:50 AM

Beautiful car! You really did some top-notch work on the conversion. I bet passing will be more difficult considering you pass on the left.

FC-Dan 09-01-09 01:56 PM

Wow I had no idea it was this much work! Props for seeing it through. I gotta say that is pretty damn cool, but the only thing I dont like about it is that all your steering crap is sitting right next to the turbo and dp. One side of the engine bay is almost empty, and the other side is stuffed.. But that is JDM tyte yo! ;)

Napsterfreak15 09-01-09 03:51 PM

/\ It makes for a great place to put an aftermarket fuel pressure reg. (the fuel lines come up from underneath the car in that spot)

sen2two 09-01-09 04:39 PM

its a little crowded... but it all fits nicely still.

i started some of the body stuff today. the paint looks better in the pics than it does in real life. i'll post pics to keep me motivated on getting it all done...

siCk FC 09-02-09 06:19 AM

Awesome job. I'd have a RHD FC if i could. Clean work. Good shyt man. You got mad knowledge to perform something like thisl and a lot of time and patience. Haha.

Napsterfreak15 09-02-09 08:19 AM

If you use the RHD windshield wiper rods and motor post pics. and let me know how hard it was to install. I discarded mine and now i kind of wish i wouldn't of.

I didnt install the wiper motor. I found out on another car of mine that Rain X is better than wipers. It was damn near a hurricane here yesterday. it flooded the streets. But i didnt even have my wipers on and could see fine...

Rain x really is that ill...

sen2two 09-02-09 03:23 PM

better interior shot...

i still have to take some armor all and rags to it. but its good for now.

Great job on the conversion! Your FC looks awesome...

I actually have an 89 FC Turbo II (JDM and RHD) that I imported from Japan last year. Because it's RHD and the VIN# is a Japanese one, my insurance company charges me double for my policy just because of the RHD issue. I've been debating on buying an FC shell (LHD) and porting over the parts or just the vin #'s.. but something tells me that legally I'm not supposed to do this. :dunno: Doing so would save me $1500/year on my insurance! Any recommendations?
