the rex ignites..then burns..then dies

hey guys, so i've searched for hours and found a bunch of issues and don't know which one to believe

so after replacing o rings in lower exh. manifold, put upperintakemanifald and others back together, checked vacuum linesx2...

my car starts, ignites, goes to 1k~1.5k, then dies(gassing the pedal has no effect) ! But then if starter fluid is sprayed into the car it stays and idles, but throttle still will not work also

what is going on? i smell fuel though so fuel pump should be working.

My car is an s4 88 10thae

AFM is most likely unplugged, or not plugged in all the way.

given the heat and humidity in your area, 1.5k cold start screams vacuum leak, and if dies, its after the AFM so start there

also i hope u used gaskets when you rebuilt the to intake components

o and check the throttle cable, its a tiny metal wire, behind the master cylinder, if a stopper fell off, that would explain the foot on gas no go problem

If you're sure the AFM is not the issue, then you've got a vacuum leak...and a big one to boot. Most likely suspects are a vac hose that didn't get plugged up, a vac hose that's cracked or even broken, but my vote goes to a torn gasket at the throttle body or the intake manifold. Replace those puppies with brand new ones and it probably wouldn't hurt to spread a bit of RTV on them when you do.

+1 on the AFM not being connected properly. You might try pulling the engine codes if you can't figure it out after a while.

if it is starting with its on fuel and fuel pressure the problem probably isn't the fuel pump. Everyone is saying the afm because then engine will start and run for a little while on the start map before it starts relying on the input from the afm.

I would suggest turning your ignition switch to the on position, and pushing on the flapper in the afm, you should hear the fuel pump run and this should also give you an idea if your afm is working at all.

This may or may not help. If your car still has the emissions check the O2 sensor. On my old car (not a 7 sadly) one of the O2 sensors went out. The car would run for a bit then die randomly.

Will the car run if you hold the gas down? If it will, it is definately a vacuuum leak.
