revving higher better?

I usually change gears around 3-4k revs, occassionally i might go lower cuz i think it'll save gas, especially in traffic, when i dun need to go fast anyways. But I've been told that revving over 3k is better for the car? Is this true?

I read something like a rotory engine is actually revving at about 1/3 the speed of a piston engine at the same tach level. So, changing gears at 3k is like changing at 1k on a piston engine, and changing below idle speed is not good for the engine. Can anyone show any facts to prove or disprove this?

I usually shift gears around 3-4K to get better fuel economy. Every now and then, its good to redline it. This is because if you never go past 5K rpm's, you could get carbon build up over time on the secondary ports which isn't good for the engine.

BTW, rotaries loved to be revved!

Watch when your shift up light comes on. This is for the most part the most fuel-effiecent shifting points. Nothing is wrong with shifting at 3k..

revving to redline is a good idea about once per day to prevent carbon build-up (I personaly do it much more, but that is just my driving style).

Sorry - no shift light on the S5's.

Yea, it's OK to normally shift at 3K.

Yes, It's helpful to pull to 7k once every 50 miles or so. It activates an extra shot from the OMP & keeps deposits from binding the seals.

I'm at 156,000 now. My plan is to take this motor to 225,000 then drop in a J-spec RENESIS..

that'd be soo sweet man, it's somethin like 260hp right? does it fit though w/o a lot of major work? probably not, eh?

newayz, i'll have to rev up higher as everyone says about the carbon buildup. Didn't know that b4. thanks guys

What's with the granny shifting.
RX-7's are sports cars.

At 3k rpms, you haven't even reached peak torque yet.
I'm not saying redline it every shift, but at least drive it like it deserves to be driven.

I usually shift at 3k, and once every week/two weeks find an excuse to redline (like coming on the highway and needing to merge ).
Contrary to what people say, redlining like once a day isn't good for the engine. Everything is at it's limits. The oil pump, water pump, all of the internals, etc. Yes, doing it occasionally is somewhat necessary, but not once a day.

Plus, if you are worried about gas mileage, you can almost see the gas guage go down when you floor it. I bet you could get 1/2 mpg or less when flooring it.

I think under full throttle at 7k rpms a N/A FC averages around 9mpg.

No way in hell any car would get that kind of mileage at full throttle at redline. The only way you could even come close to that is if you're in 5th going like 170 mph. Accelerating fast will just suck the gas down, trust me, I know

I use 87 octane, everyone and i mean everyone even the manual has told me to use 87 in an NA.....but i'm in canada, i heard in the states, most stations run higher octane. I went up to 6k today, ya, all the power comes only if u rev it high, but there were too many cars in the way to let me go faster, felt goooood

Its usually better to have the car under load (in gear) and driving it.

I usually take it easy the first few minutes to get the engine warmed up before I start redlining it.
