Well. depending on the year and model, you don't have much more to go... Just peg it and go! Shift when you hear the buzzer and enjoy. Typically, on a stocker, you'll run out of power FAR before you are in danger of blowing the motor. You'll WANT to shift.
As far as I know, the rev limiter on the S4's is 8100 RPM's, and 9100 on the S5. You won't see these marks on the tach because they are beyond what the tach reads to. There is absolutely no reason to hit this mark on either model unless you've got a serious port job and the mods to match it. You will stop making power long before these numbers. You won't have to worry about blowing the engine due to over-revs if it's in tune unless you are seriously pegging the rev limiter, and it's actually been said that redlining the car occasionally is good for it since the secondary fuel injectors don't fire until 4000 RPM's and on an N/A, the 5th and 6th ports don't function until then either IIRC. Usually the buzzer is a good indication to shift, and it's there for a reason.
If I remember correctly, every RX-7 and including the RX-8 have this buzzer.

just curious. so if i over-rev upto 8000 RPMs then it wont do MUCH harm. i remember once in my GXL.. my throttle cable came undone and got stuck... it was an ackward moment since i was pulling up to a light... it pegged for like 10 sec straight. i damn near shitted my pants from worrying about that bustin the motor.. haha, anyways..
i have a street ported n/a w/sports cat.. (came with car) and the stock Y-pipe and cannisters. how high would you guesstimate my power band would go before i wouldnt be making any power?

If you over-rev the car, it's not going to hurt it near as much as a piston engine, since the rotary engine was designed in a way that it wouldn't lose harmonic balance like a piston engine does. Obviously there are limits to this, but the rotary engine was made to be revved.
86gxl_fc, I'd say with your street port, your power band maybe closer to the 7k RPM mark on a S4 and 8k on a S5, depending on the street port's size. Your best bet is going to be to open up that exhaust of yours to match the port, along with maybe some sort of intake. Usually the S4's stop making power at 6500 RPM stock, and 7500 RPM on the S5. The S5 intake setup for the N/A was designed much better than the S4 setup, and IIRC they have higher compression rotors and a few other internal goodies too to make them able to withstand a higher RPM and have a different power band. But yea, I wouldn't be peggin' the rev limiter for 10 seconds straight again, that's a little extreme.

haha, yea didnt mean to peg it. cant even remember WHY it got stuck, i might've WOT and the cable came un-done.. thenSTUCk..
the chances of that happening.. enough to **** my pants i guess haha..!
