Resurfacing Flywheel or not?

I'm in the process of replacing my clutch and right now we have the tranny out and the old clutch out. I'm waiting for the new clutch to come in from RX-7 Store. I was wanting to resurface the flywheel but I didn't know that it is held on by one big nut that hold it on the E-shaft. Since a special tool is required and a specific preload has to be put on the nut I really don't want to mess with it. Is it necessary? My flywheel is smooth all the way across. When you change clutch's is it necessary to resurface the flywheel. I have a remanufactured engine, would a new flywheel have been included with the remanufactured engine.

If it is in really good condition, you can leave it and be pretty confident that it will go fine. Mine had massive scorches and heat cracks so I payed the 35 bucks to do it. I didn't buy any special tools. Just 4 foot long thick angle iron, a breaker bar, and an impact. Get creative, I would recconmend you still get it machined for safe-keeping.

35 is a pretty good price for a stepped flywheel with pins

if you do have it resurfaced you might look into shims.

Depends on how picky you are but they do make shims for our cars.

I posted something a while back but doesn't seem like anyone uses shims on resurfaced flywheels.

Then again i really never heard about it till after i put my flywheel in

the problem isn't getting the nut off, it is putting it back on that I'm having concerns about. Do you just tighten it down? Does there need to be any specific preload on it, like on the main pulley on the front of the engine.

just make sure the key is in correctly and impact it down with some thread locker

or just use the most force humanly possible.

use a 19mm on the front or a flywheel lock to do it.

I fabed a metal bar with one hole in it. I screwed the bolt in and let it rotate until it hit a dowel pin. Then used that to stop the flywheel.

Ha! I got my flywheel machined for $23 by a company that has been doing specialized and racing clutches and flywheels for 35 years. They put it exactly flat too (was off by 0.030") and put the proper step in it... its gorgeous... looks brand new now. If you're in the Atlanta area Specialty Clutch is the ONLY place to take a flywheel... they also sell clutches at excellent prices... a kevlar/ceramic 6-puck is under $300 including pressure plate the guy said. He used to own several RX-7's. And my flywheel looked better than bottlejocky's before I took it in... but I think it still needed it.

my clutch came with specific instructions for resurfacing. if they aren't followed, the warranty is void. has a specific amount of step-in listed.

Yes, if it looks like that those little marks on it are not good, mine looked only a little worse than that but after I put in my new clutch it got very bad. I would always get it resurfaced if it has any sort of marks on it.

Never seen a website for them but they are in the phone book under Specialty Clutch and they are out I-20 West near downtown (Lee Street area).

Specialty Clutch Service Inc
944 Murphy Av Sw
Atlanta, GA 30310

404-758-4629

I walked in, set an aftermarket japanese flywheel with no information on it down on the counter and the guy said "oh, that's for a second gen rx-7, isn't it?" I knew I was at the right place.
