Resolution to flooding problems on 89-91 FCs!

Hey guys,

I was browsing the forum the other day at work and I read that pressing the gas pedal to the floor on 89-91' FCs cuts off the fuel pump. This works PERFECT for flood prevention. I have had flooding problems ever since I've had my FC, and they seem to be most prevalent in the winter time. I'll go to start the car, and it will take a couple of tries before it will start up. Well, after I read that post, I went out to my car and held the pedal to the floor for about 3 seconds while I cranked the engine, then I let off the gas, but kept cranking and it started right up. I haven't had any problems whatsoever since I learned to use this procedure. I guess that since the fuel pump shuts off at full throttle when cranking the engine, that it burns up any excess fuel (aka flooding), therefore preventing any flooding. Seriously, this is awesome. Thanks for whomever posted that. It's the coolest thing I've learned about my car in a long time. I thought this was just an ineivitable problem associated with most FCs. It's not a problem for me anymore!

Unfortunatly not...you'll need to wire in a fuel-pump kill switch (there are several how-to's floating around). This also makes an excellent anti-theft mod, just make sure you hide the switch well...however having a toggle switch labeled "ENGINE KILL" on the dashboard would be pretty rad! :p

Actually according to the factory owners manual you are supposed to HOLD the accell pedal down while cranking if you have flooded the motor on a series 4 car.

holy ****!!!

That never really registered until now, but the person whom I bought my first FC(89 GTU) from told me you sometimes need to push the gas all the way down to get it to start. My car has not been starting on the first try of the day to start it since it got cold, but always starts up on the second try when I push the gas in.

BTW, this works for ANY fuel injected engine. It CAN flood carbed engines though.

this is very sweet! i was told once that this works but i wasnt sure how true it was but at least i know its a fact now.

my old 85 gsl was a bitch. I hate carbeurated cars. Pump the gas pedal twice, pull the manual choke out just right and hope she starts (what a pain)
