Resetting ECU on 2nd Gen
I have a 1986 GTX automatic and had to have the cat cut out recently. I am running so rich that if I stand behind the car my eyes burn. Is there a way to reset the ECU, to relearn? I tried searching for 'reset the ECU 2nd Gen' but did not come up with anything. Any help would be appreciated.
TIA,
Charles

ecu reset
You can remove the battery cabel for 30 seconds or so and it will clear any stored trouble codes and "reset" the ecu. As far as i know there is not much learnig issues with the ecu in the 2nd gen. you might actuly have a sensor failure or something unpluged like air temp sensor oxygen sensor etc... You can check the codes stored using the light method described at.

also note that if you clear the ecu "reset" you will clear the stored codes from the ecu. So you may want to check the stored codes before you reset and then after you preform the reset drive the car then check the codes to see if any return. if so then you will need to troubleshoot your codes and do the repairs as needed.

Having said that, a tool-free way to reset the ECU is to remove the BTN fuse. This disconnects battery power from the ECU.

It's on the engine bay fuse box and also found in the FAQ thread of this second generation forum.
By the way, there is no such thing as resetting a series four RX-7. Your wasting your time doing this. There is No learning curve, memory etc. It's a fairly dumb computer, but works pretty good.

Anyways, since we are on the subject, there was one time a few years ago with my old engine when it would not rev past 3000rpm I think was the rpm. There was a fuel cut at that point. The only way I was able to get rid of it, was to disconnect the battery, wait a few minutes and reconnect the battery and the problem went away.
I have no idea where the issue came from but that seemed to work.
