Resetting ECU on 2nd Gen

I have a 1986 GTX automatic and had to have the cat cut out recently. I am running so rich that if I stand behind the car my eyes burn. Is there a way to reset the ECU, to relearn? I tried searching for 'reset the ECU 2nd Gen' but did not come up with anything. Any help would be appreciated.

TIA,
Charles

ecu reset

You can remove the battery cabel for 30 seconds or so and it will clear any stored trouble codes and "reset" the ecu. As far as i know there is not much learnig issues with the ecu in the 2nd gen. you might actuly have a sensor failure or something unpluged like air temp sensor oxygen sensor etc... You can check the codes stored using the light method described at.

http://www.rotorwiki.com/index.php/86-88_error_codes

also note that if you clear the ecu "reset" you will clear the stored codes from the ecu. So you may want to check the stored codes before you reset and then after you preform the reset drive the car then check the codes to see if any return. if so then you will need to troubleshoot your codes and do the repairs as needed.

Just take your positive and negative cables off your battery. Touch them together for ~30 seconds. this will clear the capacitors and completely reset everything.

i think in the rx7 manual it actually says disconnect negative, hold in the brake for 10 seconds, then reconnect the negative

You have a rotary with no cats. What do you expect?
As stated, the ECU doesn't learn. It is a set fuel map, and its really rich. If you take out the cat, of course the exhaust is going to be horrible. These things barely pass emmisions with everything intact.

Not going to do squat. If you're running that rich then something is wrong, as in broken.

Having said that, a tool-free way to reset the ECU is to remove the BTN fuse. This disconnects battery power from the ECU.

It's on the engine bay fuse box and also found in the FAQ thread of this second generation forum.

By the way, there is no such thing as resetting a series four RX-7. Your wasting your time doing this. There is No learning curve, memory etc. It's a fairly dumb computer, but works pretty good.

hahaha. That just made my day for some reason

Anyways, since we are on the subject, there was one time a few years ago with my old engine when it would not rev past 3000rpm I think was the rpm. There was a fuel cut at that point. The only way I was able to get rid of it, was to disconnect the battery, wait a few minutes and reconnect the battery and the problem went away.

I have no idea where the issue came from but that seemed to work.

No, a hesitation is completely different to a fuel cut.

yeah, its also called the secondary fuel injector hesitation....
Not at all. For one, my hesitation starts just before 3600 and ends just after 3800. Second, this fuel cut would happen in gear or out of gear, load or no load.

I have never experienced this again and probubly never will.
