Replacing top on vert?

Hi,

Can anyone direct me to a thread or do you have information on what is involved with replacing the top to a 88 vert?

I have seen a white top for the vert on ebay from a company that states relative ease in replacing top. Is this true?

Any information or direction would be appreciated.

Michael

I don't know how it compares with other tops in difficulty. I have only done the RX7.
It is not difficult, but it is very time consuming. I spent parts of 4 weekends doing the job. This is a job that you do not want to screw up by getting in a hurry. Much difficulty was getting to a point and then not knowing the proper adhesive, figuring out what I really needed then and having to locate a buy it. That's why I listed what I used.

I could do one in a weekend after having done one.

Here is a thread that I wrote with some specific advice. Toward the bottom of the page you will find a post that has two zip files attatched. These are the other two websites that I used for referrence. Unzip them double click on the .htm file inside.

Good luck.

jackhild59, no link to the thread....

Also, I had my top replaced by an upholster for a good price not far from you, in La Puente. I've refered a number of my So Cal 7 friends and always good comments back on workmanship and price. Romans Upholstery on Valley Blvd just east of the 605 frwy.

He will want to sell you a Robbins top, for good reason. They fit the best. However, the top you're talking about is actually made by a company called Acme (spelling is probably wrong) locally in Long Beach. But, you have to go through a distributer to get one. Quality isn't as good, but you do get a color selection (I've seen white and tan for instance), you don't get from Robbins which is always black. If I were to go for a new top, I'd probably go that rought just because of the color option. White top on a white vert would be sweet.

Or, you can score a complete top assembly in great shape from a wrecking yard (which I did yesterday at a Pic a Part no less. It is clearly a replacement, probably only about 2-3 years old). In that case, it's just a few 10mm, 14mm, and 17mm nuts and it's installed.

My suggestion, save for you getting lucky like I did, have it professionally installed. You'll be much happier.

Oops! here is the link:

It's all dependent on your budget and ability.

Locally the guys who intstall tops wanted $800 for labor and also the price of a top, quoted at $450. I wasn't going to put $1250 into a car that cost $1100. I am very handy, patient and I have another car to drive while I did my top.

Part of the appeal of a project is that you get more than you pay for: I got a top installed for about $400 all-inclusive. You also gain experience, expertise and pride of accomplishement.

if I was doing it again, I would go with the cloth top rather than the vinyl.
