replacing starter...please help

i just went out to go get some lunch at work and the car wont start...
the battery is good as the radio and **** came on, but when you turn the key nothing happens...it wont crank..makes no noise...etc....
i figure its the starter...
can i go to like advance auto and expect them to have a starter for my car.....
if so can anyone tell me exactly how to change it out...
ive never replaced a starter.....im not a complete idiot when it comes to my car, i just dont know exactly where to look and what tools i will need and stuff....
i know replacing starters is pretty easy, so if anyone could jsut help me out and tell me exactly what to do...i leave at 7 and i have a friend who is going to pick me up, ...the car is in a well lite area, so maybe if it is indeed a quick fix i could just do it tonight....

PLEASE HELP!!!!

I GUARNTEE that it is a BAD connection on you battery TERMINALS. pop the hood and wiggle the terminals. MAKE SURE YOU ARE GETTING A GOOD CONNECTION!!! starter don't usualy just go out on you, they give you notice. IF it is not even making a clicking noise when you try to start it, then it is either a BLOWN fuse or bad connection, (TRUST ME)

Your chances of any local auto parts places having a starter for you are slim to none. However, most places like Autozone can usually get them within a day or two on special order.

Alright. Here's how to remove it. You'll need a 12mm socket/wrench, a 10mm, and at least 1 14mm wrench and another socket/wrench. Start by disconnecting the battery (10mm), then crawl underneath the car and locate the starter (drivers side). You'll notice a black wire that 'clips' onto the starter, just unclip it and set it aside. Now onto the thicker wire with the yellow stripe (IIRC), there's a 12mm nut holding that on, remove it then remove the wire and thread the nut back on. Now, there's a 14mm bolt on the bottom of the starter holding one of the two ears on, remove it. Now, there's two ways the next bolt and nut can be aligned, either with the bolt passed through the transmission, or with the nut on the transmission. If it's the nut that you see, then you might be able to get it off by just turning it off. If not, you're going to have to have someone hold a 14mm wrench on the bolt by popping the hood, and it'll be near the bottom of the engine block on the drivers side, kind of an ackward position. Anyway, once that's removed, the starter should come right off. Now, if you really need to get the car moved tonight or something, and you're 100% positive it's the starter, you can get a hammer and crawl under it and whack the starter a few times. That's a nice little trick that'll usually get your car started 1 to 2 more times. Good luck.

if you need a quick fix to get it going, try banging on it with a hammer or other peice of metal.. don't laugh, it actually works. I have had to do this in my 87 base before. until i could get a donor starter.

few plugs and bolts/nuts.

autozone can generally do 1 day. if you have any friends with part cars, go steal theirs. mike-p-28 is using a 1st gen starter on his 88 vert. maybe tht will give you more options. also it could very well be a bad connection. the power to run the radio etc is far smaller then cranking the motor over. so check the posts. also when you get under there to take the starter off, check those connections as sometimes they corrode and get a bad connection.

re

I had some problems with my starter. but it was the connectors that were dirty and not a bad starter. Before you buy a new starter, have it tested at autozone or advance. They do it for free. I took mine in and it worked fine. I then went and bought some cleaner to clean out the connectors and it works fine now.

Test it first, it could save you some decent money.

re

I don't know if i was clear...It wasn't the battery posts that were dirty, it was the actual plastic clips under the car that needed to be cleaned. I had a heater core hose burst and it leaked coolant all over the connector. It quit working about a week later.

just wanted to clear that up.

Replacing the starter is a piece of cake. I did it like two weeks ago. Just need the right sockets, it can be done in an hour.

i was down there a year and a half ago. went to nashville looking for a 2nd gen, stopped at a dyno and met some 3g members on the forum, and then to murfeesboro to watch some street races. funny thing was we were in my friends accord and stopped in the domestic crowd. doh.

yep, probably dirty terminals. Get a 3 dollar terminal cleaner from a hardware store, and scrape all the corroded lead off. Just because your radio works doesn't mean you have a good connection. The starter pulls a lot more current than the radio.

A non-running rex? Have you cleaned and tightened the battery connections yet, as suggested?

Come on, young man! We're waiting!
