Exclamation replacing rear bearings for dummies

My search came up short. I need to replace my rear bearings tomorrow! The manuel is just too vague. I need details. Any Links? 1988 n/a gtu.

Thanks. Brock.

you will have to undo the rear caliper... then take the locknut off..

take the rotor off... take the hub to a shop... have them press it out... and press in new bearings...

done.

Question Removing Hub

OK. I've made it up to the hub part. How do I remove the hub. Is there something holding it or do I just bang on it for hours. The manual shows the hub with one nut removed. I don't understand. Does the axle stay in????Thanks for the patience.

The hub can and should be very tight. I had to have my hub pressed out when I changed my rear bearings. Most machine shops can do it all for about 20-30 bux.

Black RX7 - You are talking about the front bearings.

On reading this stuff again, I think that the guy trying to do this hasnt removed thehub from the car. The rear half shaft stays where it is. you do not have to remove it at all fom the car but you must remove the 1.5 inch nust (guess?) from the axle. then the half shaft will let the hub go. I think theres 3 main bolts/nuts holding the hub assembly on. 1. Rear steer bushing 2. lower A-Arm 3. Bushing at the 10 or 2 o'clock posision. (10 o'clock on passenger side, 2 o'clock on driver's side). Of corse the caliper has 2 14mm bolts.

The delrin (steer) bolt is I remember correctly is 19mm.

I wouldn't mind a little conclusive info on this subject either. I'm gonna need to change mine pretty soon, so I figured I'd check this thread. since no one really come to a solid conclusion, I'm gonna assume Saab's right, but I'll give this a bump and hope someone can help us all out here.

I recently changed my rear-bearing on an 86gxl. I don't know if it's different, but the process was as described above. First the brake caliper and the mounting bracket comes off, which allows the brake rotor to be removed. Then the spindle nut that threads onto the end of the axle needs to be taken off. This is a big nut and I had to rent the appropriate socket. Once this nut is removed, there are three bolts left that hold the hub on the car. They are located on the top and bottom of the hub and on the front side of the hub. Two of these bolts have nuts on the other side, and the last bolt threads into the car frame with a little rubber bushing between the frame and the hub. This was severely rusted on my car and frozen in place. Once these bolts are removed, the hub just pulls off the splines on the end of the axle and the axle stays on the car with one end free and the other end going into the differential. I had to take my hub to a machine shop to have the old bearing pressed out and my new bearing pressed in. I was able to re-use my dust seal. Hope this helps.
